most likely what you're describing is a contemporary striking from the early 1960's that may have been issued either by Bashlow or Bowers, using a knockoff of the "Hogge" design and an Elder reverse from the 1909 Hudson SC$ issues. they were struck on Silver and Copper planchets the size of a Silver Dollar, 38mm.

  • i dont have a way to get a pic yet....

from the two real ones ive seen recently in person, tis one is damn convincing. same size, same colors, weight, and suface and strike quality. if it is a contemp. its gotta be a masterpiece.

it has a fair bit of corroison but i am no expert.

    can you describe it??
  • well for the corrosion many were found by metal detectors so..............
  • im a metal detector freak myself, and so was he in south fl in the 50s-60s.

i would have to have it in hand, its been awhile since ive held it, but could get it tomorrow.

if you look through the stack's archives through last yrs. major sales, youll find 1 sale with 2-3 of them in it.

i can find the catalog and post which one.

he doenst want to send it off anywhere so im helping him.

recently my dad got a rare mad hadder encased postage stamp from him. its like 1 of 2-3 known in that denom. no cracks on the mica either.

thanks for all the help with this...

With that hoggie, I would say the nastier it looks, the more likely it is to be real. image

If it turns out to be real, I know someone who is actively looking for one. The chances that it is really are pretty slim, tho. If it is real, it's likely a 6-figure coin...
  • oh i know a guy too, me. its beat up but still has a realy nice look to it. he knows of poss. value and rarity. the money isnt really a thing for him though.

jona, is the person you mention currently have one? just curious.

<< <i>jona, is the person you mention currently have one? just curious. >>

. I don't think so. It's more a friend of a friend, so I don't have full details. It was just mentioned in passing, "If you ever come across..." with the expectation that I never would come across one... image
  • Any genuine specimen would command a very strong price, and there would be multiple collectors and dealers vying for it (including us).

If you post a pic, I think we could determine if it was 'potentially real' or 'clearly not real' fairly easily. If it is in the potentially real category, it will certainly be in the owner's interest to have it authenticated.

  • thanks for all the help. ill see if i can get a pic of it.

i myself am leaning to the real side. when i held it, there was a real quality and vibe i just got. anyone know how many are currnetly in a collection? if not, how would i find out?

The one that Stack's sold is here. This issue pretty much only is found in "cruddy" condition. If you have one that feels real, it almost certainly isn't, since the ones that are real don't look it!

Hahaha that'll wake one up image

I can't recall seeing a fake with green corrosion on it. Doesn't mean yours is real, but it does likely rule out any more modern concoction.

Still waiting for the pics though . . .
  • the pics will be a few days, weeks, i found out this evening he is having some pretty bad health problems. the corrosian is on both sides and thick in area's.
i would bet alot that he dug it up in s. fl when he was detectoring. thats what he said and i do take him at his word. he's no fool. i hope its real. i know i am the only person who he has shown whose even gave it a second look. i know of the potential price but i just like it for what it may be.

as soon as i get a answer about picking it up to get a photo, i will let all know. man i hope its real.
he gave me dibbs on it so if it is, it will be the center piece of my coll. then id need a 1776 cont. $1.
