Ever seen one of these?

image
Looking for some information on this coin. I know, well I think I know, it is an old German Thaler of some sorts. Any info on the coin, values, and where I might find one. I searched ebay with no results. Thanks!

It's a popular "Wildman" thaler from Brunswick - Wolfenbuttel. As far as price goes - not an extremelly expensive series with more common pieces starting around $150 in VF+ condition. Search eBay worldwide for "wildman" under world coin category.

Ahh... well I will say this, "I HATE YOU!!!!" image

I saw this while looking around for one of the Basel City Talers that someone posted as their best pickup of 07. I fell in love with that coin and now this one to! I'm a bit skeert to ask but....what's the price range on this bad boy?

Ahh...I should have read your whole post. The pic put part of the words off screen for me. Starting at around $150.. I see now... Thanks!

  • Unless you have your heart set on a Thaler, fractional pieces all the way down to pfennigs can be had for quite a bit less than the thalers. A decent pfennig can be had usually for about 5 bucks or less.

And actually I think that one you pictured is from Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg. The tree is in the wildmans right hand, if it were Br-Wolfenbuttal it would be in the left (I had to re-label a whole bunch of 2X2s when I figured that one out) image Except the one TwoKopeiki posted, that is one of the few exceptions... image

Anyway, this is a very popular series and can be had in the smaller denominations from 5 bucks on up to the sky is the limit when talking some of the scarcer thalers and high grades...

  • This is a 24 Marien Groschen (2/3 Thaler) from Brunswick Wolfenbuttal that I picked up for 60 dollars about a year or so ago. If you are patient there are bargains to be found...

The VCoins site is not a bad place to start looking around to learn availability and price ranges.

I guess my next question is going to be how often are these coins counterfeited and is there a genreal rule of thumb for snifffing out the coutnerfeit. I get skeert when dealing with ebay and "ancient" or older coins. When I look at some of these older coins I think, "Man I could make one of those out in my metal shop".......
What say you about this one.... Link

  • It looks OK to me and the seller has an excellent feedback record and has been selling on eBay for 8 1/2 years. I have never dealt with this seller so I can't say for certain. The shipping is pretty reasonable though I personally am hesitant to buy anythingon eBay that I can't use PayPal to pay for so at least I have a little protection. But that is just me, with over 2000 transactions and only a couple of negatives I would be pretty comfortable in bidding if it were something I was interested in...

Just my thoughts, maybe someone else here will have dealt with the seller or have a different view on it.
