When will the top 10 sets in Modern Type sets all be %100 complete?

We have 6 complete sets now and 3 at %98. Lord M. is next with %91 then Cosmicdebris with %89. My %98 will change to %100 soon, maybe next week image

My guess is March 21'st to pick a date out of the hat. What is yours?

There are no prizes for the winner image

The contest might not make sense after the modern type set changes that might occur.

  • Carl,

My guess is that we won't see it for a while. I would say no sooner than August for Top 10 to each be 100% in this series, and that assumes no major changes. I know that when weighting occurs on the set, they are also going to add the "designator" deductions. Currently, a PR69 gets the same points as a 69DC on this set. No telling if they will add any new coins. Right now, they have Silver proofs for Washington 92-98, why not a State silver proof for 99-present?

Carl, are you talking about the MintState 1959- date type set?

  • Pat,

Carl is referring to the 1900-present set. 1959-forward set has 7 at 100%, with several creeping up. I see that you just tied for the #5 spot on that one and are back on the front page.

    Pat,
I'll need to get my MS68 76 quarter in quick!

    Carl,
My guess is 24 Apr 02--that's my goal of when my set will be 100%, so I could be #10.

I might complete by March 21st but it won't be easy. I actually have a 1976-S silver Ike in PR68 DCAM (formerly NGC PR69 UCAM) and a 1901 $10 Lib in MS61 (formerly ANACS MS63), fresh from crossover, but the system will not recognize the cert numbers, despite several tries. I just emailed PCGS about that.

The $10 Lib violates my self-imposed "nothing under 62" rule but makes a nice "filler", ha ha. I might try to reholder it as an ANACS 63 due to the price gap. I would have accepted (and expected) a 62 on it but a 61 is too low, in my opinion. In the ANACS holder it was rather dull and grimy so I hit a few spots with diluted Jeweluster and a Q-tip, vastly improving the coin's appearance.

So really all I lack now is a Type 2 clad Bicentennial Ike (easy to find and afford), a Barber half in MS or PR62 (tough to find without heavy toning and tougher to afford), and a With Motto Saint in 63 or better (easy to find but moderately tough to afford)...

So will all the Top Ten be 100% by the time I complete the set? I don't know. I plan to complete before summer. I used to have aspirations to the Top Five but that looks harder and harder. I am certain I will never catch High Desert and Bill Walser (who I met at FUN-interesting to meet him and some of his coins in person!)

Many of the people on this board, including some with this set, do not consider anything but a full set as worth collecting ( or in this case, a full type set ). It sure seems strange that all of this competitive nature goes into these partial type sets. I for one hope the battle continues.

I'm playing on "THE BIG SET", too. (Complete US Type Set, 1792-1964), but I have not added some of the new acquisitions to it yet.

I'm going to complete that set and be #1 on that Registry, too.

    By 2165.

It'll be nice to celebrate the completion of my set and my 200th birthday together. I'll throw a big celebration, so y'all be sure to hop into your teleporter pods or hovercars and come on down to the party.

I'll show off all the coins and none of you will be able to call it a "partial" set then. image

  • Why is it that the last coin you need always seems to be the most difficult one to find?imageimage I don't plan it that way. I don't have the grade to compete with the front page but I should be complete now if the coin numbers go into the data banks on Monday. I got shot down an NGC MS62 1913 $2.50 gold Indian. PCGS graded my crack out an AU58.imageimageimage At least they didn't bag it like they did on the 1917 type 2 SLQ.imageimage
This 1900 set and the MS modern set have been a real learning experience, a very enjoyable one as well. I learned a lot about coins that I had never really considered collecting before this. The complete US Type Set looks like a real chalange but that one may have to wait for awhile. I need to concentrate on the American Eagle sets again.

  • I made a deal for a type 2 SLQ so when I get that, if I like it, I will be %100 complete!! Yeah! And it was by far the hardest for me image It might have been easy but I couldn't make up my mind.

Hey Lord, I'll be at your party. I'll be wearing my holey hat. I guess by then I'll have upgraded to a vest. Thanks a bunch for getting me started on that and sending me some neat coins!!!

Sorry to hear about that 58, Larry. I'm beginning to understand why buying 58s is a good idea.
