New photo style...

So yesterday I went out and bought a flash for my Canon 30D. I got the 430EX, which I might add is a killer flash to match a killer camera. Anyhow I have always heard flashes and coins do not mix so I did not even think of shooting coins with it. I had got it for other uses. Anyhow being the person I am I got to fiddling with it. Using 2 OTT lights and my flash here is the new photo.

I happen to agree the coin is surely killer. Beats many of the toners I have seen around. As far as pure color goes this one ranks up there. It is caked on the coin and the image does not leave ya hanging. that is for sure.

Back in ancient times (before digital) electronic flash was the best way to get consistently good coin photos with correct color balance.

Before giving thoughts I would really like to see the before and after pics. i.e. with and without the flash.

The colors are stunning.

Here is an old photo just using OTT lights. Notice no real luster captured like in the current photo.

A little too much color for my taste.

What's the WB for the flash? If it's not the same as an Ott you'll get color changes.

As a side note an older shot not using the flash would have the slab with tons of glare.

It is a tad different, but I can fiddle with the settings more. The color is spot on for the coin though.

The color is hotter on the present image compared to the Ott only pic.

Take a picture of a white coin with the same Ott/flash setup. That will show any color probs better.

killer color and very nice coin. id like to see the obverse if possible. i love the colors. really sharp...

I took some white coins and shot some photos as well. The color on them is nice, but as you say a tad bit off. The main difference is the fact I am able to allow alot more light in since I have backed the camera off from the coin more than it used to be. The old photo captures the color ok, but totally leaves out the luster. Looks a bit dull and uninviting. Any color difference is well worth the after product. Now this does method does not work on every coin, but which method does?

That kinda stuff kills me. Probably my radiology training to blame.

Just be glad I was not like many on ebay and would juice the images up like so... The first photo represents the color really well if you ask me.
