November Special Grades Poppage (Vintage)

I'm very pleased overall with these grades, though I was hoping to garner at least one 1975 PSA 10. These were all pulled from wax and rack packs. The PSA 9 Jackson Todd was especially pleasing. (A card is missing from the list No. 19 1973 OPC PSA 9 Roy White.) I actually resisted the urge to check my grades on line and waited till the box came from PSA. It was lots of fun that way!

Thanks, Robbie, appreciate the kind words. I've been slowly building an OPC set for 1972 and 1973, and all of the cards I submitted to PSA were from wax packs that I've been opening over the last few months.

Nice job on the 1975s. I've been thinking about resubmitting some of my 8s. I sent them in when they were stingy with handy out 9s. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

    Nice job Grote!

I have a couple of 72 OPC specials in right now and I hope that I get your grader. I just had a $13/5 Day special pop and got crushed. The 72 OPC's were still in wax packs last month and just about every card was down a full grade from my expectations and past experiences.

I hate that. It's a crapshoot. If you crack them all out and get a different grader, you very well could get a grade bump on all of them.

The 2 of the 72 OPC Aaron in Actions were better centered than my PSA 8 with perfect corners. The 71 Rose was so nice I was worried that it might be recolored.

So - as Johnny Cochrane said - "If the grade does not fit, you must resubmit..."

They are all over the board on rough cuts. If the cut is not severe it should not down grade the card at all. Most vintage should have a natural roughness to them. I've seen the the 49 bowman Paige graded a 6, 7, and 8 that have all looked the same. I sent in a beautiful 49 bowman Robinson that was clean as a whistle and got a 7 due to rough cut. If you get a head grader you will get 8's on rough cuts-bulk submitters you are probably in trouble 6's and 7's.
    Thanks,

I've submitted many OPC cards from the 1972 and 1973 sets with rough cuts, and have found that PSA will not downgrade because of the rough cut. I've gotten many PSA 9s on rough cut cards. They shouldn't downgrade on OPC issues because that's the way they were produced (with airplane wire used for the cutting process). The only time you'll see a smooth edge on am OPc issue from this era is if those cards were cut right after the wires were changed (and they were changed very infrequently), or if the card is sheet cut. Personally, unless I pulled the card myself from a wax pack, I prefer the rough cut because I know it hasn't been sheet cut.

    Grote,

Agreed. I love the rough cut myself. And so far, I've gotten a dozen PSA 10's back from PSA in 72's. More than half have some rough edge on them.

P.S. - As always - if you get dups that you see I need - take a look at my trading set and lets see if we can work something out!

  • I sent 55 OPC 1972's in last week - all were from wax packs I just bought from BBC Exchange. They all look perfect to me, but I'm sure the graders won't agree. It doesn't look like opening raw packs is the way to go... I spent $700 to buy the packs and around $300 to get them graded... about $20/card.

True, unless you can pull a mint star card to offset your grading fees. I was lucky enough to garner a PSA 9 Munson and a PSA 9 Bench IA on my previous sub, but you definitely have an uphill battle to make a profit when submitting OPC cards, as interest in these sets is very slim at this point. Even though they are much less expensive than Topps, the OPC packs don't offer the same upside that Topps packs do.

Still, as a collector, these sets with their rough cuts please me, so that trumps the poor investment return, IMO.
