New ANA Board of Governors Makes A Major Decision!!!

With all due respect...the magnitude of this decision simply boggles my mind...

From the ANA December E-Newsletter....

The Numismatist Coming in January

In a recent decision by the Board of Governors, the name of the ANA magazine has been changed back to The Numismatist, the original title used by George Heath when he founded the publication in 1888.

The new title is included on the cover and table of contents of the upcoming January issue, with full-magazine changes made in the February issue. The ANA also will change the magazine title on promotional materials such as brochures once current supplies are used.

Sooooo...the magazine...and a good one, I must say... will no longer be called "Numismatist"...

... now that is what I call a much needed change for the good of the hobby...

I don't suppose they'll be returning to their older format or more scholarly bent, though...

You would be surprised how much things like this matter to some people.

I really would like to see the tabled proposal to add a dealer bourse inventory kiosk at the ANA shows get some traction. I thought that was a marvelous idea that brings the organization and the bourse into the information age in a really productive way.

We noticed that also, right after 9/11, the "lamp of knowledge" was replaced with something
chillingly close to them emblem of worldwide Muslim jihad....

They also dropped the non-circulating academic journal (NCAJ).

Maybe they don't need to return to the old logo, but they should replace the current 2nd grade design with something more professional.

That's excellent news. I had hoped things would start to improve under the new leadership. This just shows that some things take time, and if we are patient, in the end we will see improvement. I was not going to rejoin the ANA, but this might cause me to reconsider. image

fc – Apparently this is some organization that has aspirations for rising from the nearly dead (kind of like my stock portfolio??). I certainly hope both can occur – soon.

RWB-- just take your publishing house public, and you won't need to worry about your stock portfolio. The future revenue stream from the upcoming book sales, even on a discounted basis, will be enormous. image

Ziggy, the Ike Group is doing its best to bring some scholarship to bear on Ikes in Numismatist, though the series is so new and the Mint so closed in that "scholarship" isn't quite the right term: maybe "digging"?

We have a really neat three-part 6,000 word article that I hoped Numismatist would serialize but no go so I'll be sending it to Coin World for their review.

I enjoyed the massive serialized scholarly works that "The Numismatist" published in the 1970's.

I hope you were not being facetious in your comment. Yes, there are many of us who care about such things. And as Michigan stated, I hope they restore the lamp of knowledge as the official logo next. Perhaps just symbols to some, but a little more deeply rooted to many.

Actually...yes...it was "tongue in cheek" ...

Please don't get me wrong...I am an ANA member...I do enjoy the magazine...read it from cover to cover...

But whether it is called "Numismatist" or "The Numismatist"...to borrow from Gary Cooper (edited to add...oops, I meant Clark Gable...thank you DroopyD) ... Frankly, my dears, I don't give a d*mn...

If this is truly a matter of concern for many of the ANA membership...then I would say it speaks volumes as to why the organization is as ineffectual as it is.

Actually, Gary Copper was offered -- and turned down -- the part of Rhett Butler in GWTW, reportedly saying: "Gone With The Wind is going to be the biggest flop in Hollywood history. I'm glad it'll be Clark Gable who's falling flat on his face and not Gary Cooper."

(And remember too that Bette Davis was to have been cast as Scarlett!)

Thank you for the correction, DroopyD...

...yet the sentiment still stands...if the use or non use of the simple word "the" is an important matter for ANA membership... it is no wonder that the organization is, to put it mildly, not what it could be...

It was but one, albeit small, matter of concern, and now that the new board is in place and taking action on many items, I see the much awaited turnaround taking place. I feel that it is a bit unfair to characterize the ANA or any of its members as ineffective simply because they felt that the dropping of the article "The" was poorly advised. Where was your criticism when the article was dropped? That was when the error occured. Now it is corrected and we can move on to more important business.

They that can give up essential Liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin
  • And they did this without even consulting the membership! Why do I have to learn these things on the street??!

Actually, I'm still trying to figure out what the purpose is behind identical outside covers every month. It can't be for security, because it has a large coin on it.

If my memory serves me correct (which is does 99.9999999% of the time), Chet Krause, in his campaign for the ANA Board, stated that he wanted to bring back the "lamp of knowledge". I personally think that it will indeed come back, the only question is when.
