1797 George III British Penny

Would one in poor-1 condition or so have any value comparable to American pieces of the same era?

Changed my answer from "Huh?" to "Not much in that condition."

Simply put, is it worth anything?
  • If that's the Sygun Museum George III Copper Penny, my guess is no. One just sold on ebay, appears to be VG-F, for $9.47.

Actually, I don't really know. Is it a rare date or variety?

Generally, I think US Federal and Colonial pieces would sell for more.
  • Don't know anything about it. They are also calling them "CARTWHEEL" Penny. Highest priced one (1797) I've seen on ebay sold for $38.21. You might try the World coin forum.

I could barely tell what it was, I had to go by what the person selling it to me told me it was. I know nothing about British coins. It looks like it was in circulation for all 200 years of its existence, it's that worn down. You can see George's head on one side, Brittania on the other, a few letters on the side of the profile, and that's about it. But I paid .20 for it (in nice, original condition), and it's a neat conversation piece. Plus the sheer weight of the copper (if that's all that's in it) is pretty hefty.
  • A low grade cartwheel will sell for a dollar or two.
When you can find a buyer. They're pretty common.
