1899 Morgan Dollar ~~ Grade Opinions

Here is a pretty decent 1899 Morgan Dollar, what grade would you put on the flip based upon the picture. Just looking for some collective thoughts. image

Very nice strike on that one. Looks to have the characteristics of an UNC coin, but can't tell if there's rub from the pics. If not, I'm with the Bulldog that posted ahead of me.....MS62

MS62. If it had just the field marks, it would be MS63, but the marks around the eye hold it back.

  • nice coin, very nice strike. i am by nomeans an expert morgan grader but id say a 62 at pcgs, a 64 at ngc, and a whooping 68+ at anywhere else.

Be real and pass the koolade along. Show me an NGC 64 Morgan that looks like that.

  • Thanks for taking the time for a looksee, much appreciated. image I'm probably going to mark the flip MS-62. Inhand there is too-much chatter on the obverse. Additionally it's beginning to tone a little but my camera won't catch the (pinkish/blue) coloring beginning on the reverse.

Wasn't sure if it was a joke. Have also seen worse in 64 holders at the top three but rare, exceptional cases. And that is a good date still for the price, esp in near gem PL.

  • i agree 100%. i recently saw , and i wont name the party, that had a 65 in a top 3 holder and was priced at around $5-600. not bad for a 1899 65. but the reverse was a 62 all day long.
its rare, but they are out there.

the reason for the 64 and 68 comments was do to the fact that recently ive been seening alot of coins in 69-70 holders and they wouldnt even grade a true 63.

Here is a real shame. At least it wasn't fully struck.

Give me a break, no way would NGC grade that a 64.

ms62--For some reason it seems to me that more1899-P Morgans come in baggier condition than most other dates for the most part-at least in my experience. It may just be me but it took me a while before i saw an MS64 that i liked. They also seem to have less luster. Your coin is a typical 1899. I would suggest waiting for a higher grade-less bagy coin. It will be worth the wait. JME. Bob
