1909s vdb: PCGS or ANACS? Guess the Grade UPDATE

My CFO at work brought this in today and wants me to send it off for grading. There are a few lines in front of the face on the obverse, they actually look worse when looking without magnification. I looked under magnification and they do not appear to have any depth at all to them. Do you think it would bodybag for this? If so, I'd send it to ANACS. If you think it would grade at PCGS, I would rather send it there.

Oh, also what do you think the grade is? Thanks.

  • I'd say ANACS, just to be safe. The pictures make it look cleaned.

I think the streaks you're seeing is a "woodgrain effect" that was common to S-mint cents in their first few years.

I'd strictly grade it VG-10 on a technical basis but I suspect it would probably get into a F-12 holder.

Thanks for your replies. I graded it fine12, but am not very familiar with the series or lincolns at all, far from my usual pl morgans. I just don't want to waste time/money if it would likely bodybag at PCGS.

Sad to say but to me that is a suspicious mintmark. As far as service I'd try ANACS, I think it appears a little too cleaned for PCGS' taste.

I think the mintmark is ok, I looked under high mag and it looks legit. I know my pictures are not the greatest. The other cents he brought in, bought by his father, were highly polished. This one looked the most original by far, the others were obviously cleaned.

anacs. i just hope you have a few other coins to send in.
sending just one coin on a submission seems so darn expensive.
sending in 5 spreads the cost out over more coins.
    ;0)

nice coin. i wish i owned it for my album. approx value is 1000 or so?
  • i agree with the other posters f15 maybe if the grader gets a lil action from the misses a vf 20. still a good example of the 09 svdb.

I see, that'd explain the appearance as well -- good luck getting it slabbed.

Reverse is a vf-20, obverse falls a bit short unless the photo is masking better cheek-jaw separation so f-15 overall. Does look cleaned as well, unfortunately.

Neither...the coin appears to have an added mintmark. But if you want to be sure, choose ANACS.
  • That coin looks like a spark erosion counterfeit. Might as well go with ANACS.

The coin does look a little suspect...it might just be the pictures though. If it were mine I'd send it to ANACS.

Well, at least it's legit and slabbed.
