I noticed that there are lots of the Eliasberg World gold coins being auctioned again by Stack's

I just got the Stack's world coin and medal catalog yesterday. I tried to check their website for the proper spelling of the sale, but it is some strange name that starts with a K that I cannot remember.

Anyway, as I was sitting in my overstuffed chair last night, sipping a fine cognac, I noticed that there were many, many coins from the Eliasberg World Gold sale from 2005 which are now being re-auctioned in this upcoming sale. Most of the coins are Mexican and South American coins. Of course, in today's market, a coin that has been off the market for almost two years is fresh, fresh, fresh, but I was surprised by the number that were in the catatlog.

I thought the Eliasberg sales figures were strong. Does anyone know if the world gold market is that hot that such a quick flip is possible?

A lot of Eliasbergs world gold were common and sold for bullion at that time. With gold up profits will come.

Many of the ex-Eliasberg coins in the sale Longacre references (The Kroises Collection catalog) are big ticket items with estimates into the high 5-figures. So this isn't bullion we're talking about.

By today's standards (based on our own observations) 2 years is no longer a 'quick flip'. It's more like the norm. In any case, I assume (but could be wrong) that the buyer of many of these significant items at Eliasberg was the serious 'Kroises Collection' owner who is now dispersing his own mega-holdings.
  • Many of the Eliasberg coins were offered last March by Stack's. I am not sure how they did, but perhaps these were coins that did not meet the reserves then. Perhaps the consignor from March put these coins in the sale with the Kroises to perhaps get these coins to meet the reserves.

    You might well be right.

There are some really nifty Italian pieces in the auction. Edited to add: But that's neither here nor there.

The catalog looks very nice. It's amazing how "unmessed with" foreign coins appear, versus the bright, shiny, conserved coins that we frequently see on the US side.

Now if the kids get to bed early tonight, I can make another appointment with the easy chair, and perhaps sip a Manhattan while perusing the offerings.

Is a Manhattan the appropriate beverage for the "Hobby of Kings"?

Absolutely! I typically don't drink very often (and never during the week). I'm a beer and wine guy, but when I am in situation when it would be unacceptable to have beer, the king of co*tails, the Manhattan, is what I drink.

Enjoyed the 'Kroises Collection' catalog. Some amazing world gold. Too rich for my blood though.
