Why do you think the FUN show is the #1 show in the World?

ScarsdaleCoinScarsdaleCoin Posts: 5,245 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just looking at the updated FUN website and they talk about the FUN show being #1
(I agree that it is the #1 show, no if's ands or butts)

but why do you think FUN is # 1 ?

and could another show jump into the #2 spot
(currently I give that honor to the ANA Summer Show)

and I would give the # 3 honor to the Spring Baltimore show...

So is it the Weather? Location? # of Dealers?

Some combo of the above ???

Many people spoke to me this year and told me that Coinfest is now in the top 15 and they are putting the show in their schedule... either to attend or take a table.... We had a great 1st show but have a long way too go... however I do believe that Coinfest will in a few years be in the top 10 and I was very happy that we have a very strong location locked in with more room for many more dealers!

Anyway... your thoughts???

I think the fact that it's the first show of the year has something to do with it. There is something psychological about getting a good jump on the new dealing year.

you said it yourself. the weather. there is a foot of snow on the
ground here in NH and being in some warm weather sounds
    good.

i am sitting in the office with a sweatshirt and jacket and knit hat
on because i like being warm. sitting in a desk chair you really do not
    build up much body heat.

coins and warm weather sounds awful good right now.

where do you think Long Beach falls in the rankings?

Not sure I could handle FUN. Way too warm for me. We haven't even had jacket weather yet (only a few days below zero).

I have never been to FUN, so I cannot compare it to the Summer ANA. I have heard they are comparable. Why would you say it is better?

I think that the January FUN is #2, with the summer ANA #1. Some believe that FUN is #1 and that is mainly because of their consistent location. That is the only factor that gives them a possible edge.

The annual ANA convention has more educational programs, more specialty club meetings, more exhibits, more world attendees, etc.

They also never have any serious competition from other organizations (this year's FUN as well as one a couple of years ago have been in competition with the NY International, run concurrently).

They have a dedicated & paid convention services department and I wouldn't expect any other organization to be able to top the ANA's efforts. Some annual ANA conventions are better than others, meaning better attendance, but that is a function of location.

Coinfest will become a wonderful show and I am looking forward to continued success there. Exhibitions that cater to the public are the only serious contenders, IMHO, and Coinfest certainly made an extraordinary effort that will be rewarded in the future.

Julian has many great points (as always)

FUN/ANA are very close.... shame that the international is the same time and creating a conflict.....

In answer to question posted, I would put Long Beach in Top 10

    1. First major show of the year.
    2. Location.
    3. Weather.
    4. Size..number of dealers.
    5. Coins being offered.

I think location has a lot to do with it. A family can easily fly down to Orlando and the husband or wife (gotta be gender neutral here) and take the non-YNs to Disney or whatever. It is also right after the holidays so people are still in the buying mood after Christmas. The only down side is that this year it is at the same time as the NYI show which I know for us, will be a major pain.

My opinions are almost totally in alignment with what Julian stated. The ANA summer convention seems to have a slight edge in "buzz" and the ANA educational programs and exhibits have no comparison.

It should also be noted that the FUN convention is typically the largest coin show in the U.S. in terms of the number of bourse tables. The ANA host cities vary in terms of appeal whereas with an occasional exception the FUN convention is hosted in a place where there is universal family appeal.

I noticed that Pennywise listed FUN as one of the shows that consistently has the best security.

IF you talking about attendance, FUN isn't even close to the #1 show in the world. Many overseas coin events are much larger in size; maybe FUN is the largest in the US though.

  • All of the stated reasons are valid but add into that mix another factor of great importance.
The enthusiasm, hard work and professionalism exhibited by every member of the FUN staff.
They also took over a Palm Beach show that was dead in the water and turned it into a huge sucess the very first year.
Notice some other shows that used to be highly ranked until new management took them over.
Efficient management of a show must be considered at least equal to the other factors. Dave W

    because it is FUN!!!! image
  • The location provides the perfect opportunity to plan an entire vacation around the show. The theme parks, restaurants, and attractions all within short distance offer a great variety of venues. I overhear many dealers at FUN discussing planned days for the theme parks, dinner reservations, and all other types of plans to enjoy the area. The weather is usually so much better than most other parts of the country during the show to enjoy these other venues. I can't comment on other major shows since I've never attended, so I'm unfamiliar with the other available forms of entertainment within the areas such as in Baltimore or Long Beach.

Agree with the weather answers. The Midwest is buried
in snow and ice -- the first full day of Winter is Sat.
