Ken Griffey Jr in perspective

frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,097 ✭✭✭✭✭
With all of the Mitchell Report talk and the artificial inflation of number, I thought about what an insanely great player Ken Griffey Jr has been. He just turned 38 years old. He has 593 career home runs, and I don't think for a second that he has juiced. While most of his contemporaries took short cuts, he just continued to plug along. Oh sure, there have been the injuries that have slowed him down a little, but he is still knocking on the door of 600 home runs and he's not done yet. Can you imagine if he had not been injured so much? I would say that he would have over 700 by now. Regardless of that, I think we all need to recognize what a great ball player Ken Griffey Jr has been and still is.

No question the juice would have healed his injuries quicker or perhaps he wouldn't have had certain types of injuries - that's one thing the juice does. Of course chances are Griffey will live healthy to a ripe old age whereby those heavy juicers will be dropping dead in their 40's and 50's. It's seems as though it's a rare heavy juicer who makes it to age 60.
  • If Grif wants to he can hit 20-30 homers for the next 5 years and get to 700. Unfortunately by that time he'll be not only caught, but surpassed by A-rod. I hope he hangs around anyways, and hopefully in 20 years the list of 700 home run hitters will only have 5 names on it:
    A-Rod
    Aaron
    Ruth
    Griffey
    Howard (Ryan, not Frank)
Do the right thing Selig, if you won't take Bonds name off, step down so someone with some balls can do it for you.

Just to play devil's advocate, how do we know the juice is not what contributed to his injuries? Don't get me wrong, I love Junior and hope he is clean, but at this point, I wouldn't rule out anybody. The Mitchell report concentrated on virtually one, local source for info and yet, was able to pull over 80 names.
  • If he juiced, he would have hit 1000 HRS
I dont think he has juiced, look at his size compared to the others

    Look at Ralphie Palmiero.

You can't use appearances any more to judge whether they're juicing any more.

Can you imagine a juiced Ted Williams in todays game? Guy might hit .500 90 HR's!

Or even better, a Cobb who decided he'd swing for the fences. Problem is, he'd probably being doing time for myriad reasons that would interfere with the season.

My eye doctor told me that he read where Ted Williams had 20/08 uncorrected vision. That means whatever the normal person can read at 8', Ted could read it at 20'. Ted Williams could read a record label while it was spinning. By the way, mine is 20/200 uncorrected, but with contacts, its 20/15.

Junior is unreal. I watched him very closely his first 11 years, in Seattle.

He was truly a man among boys, even when he was 19 yrs old. A classy hitter, just like his dad.

As impressive as he was (and is) offensively, his defense was even better. Top shelf.

Watching him run down fly balls, and make leaping catches, crashing into walls...... it NEVER got old.

He was one spectacular center fielder. Sadly, I think all the years on the Kingdome’s turf took its toll. But what a player – the best I’ve ever seen.

  • Griffey Jr. was and still is a great player. Back in the day I was amazed at how he made things look so easy. I will always remember Jessie Barfield's quote. Barfield was playing for the Yankees (I believe this was in 1990) and was 1 HR shy of 200. He crushes one and Griffey runs back, leaps and makes a crazy catch robbing Barfield of his 200th HR. Later in the game Barfield gets up and hits one a mile - not even close to being robbed. He touches home plate and tells the catcher and ump "If the kid catches that one I'm going to check his urine".

S'alright by me... allows me to get his cards without breaking the bank. This is my main problem with modern HOF caliber players, I have no idea which rookie of theirs to pursue (without taking it to an unreasonable limit and buying the "uberchromerefractor" signed version.)
