Is $18.60 excessive shipping for 15 half dollars- ebay purchase- UPDATE- some of coins rec'd!

So the other night I won 15 different auctions from the same seller for some fairly common Walking liberty halves, shipping was listed as $4.60 each auction, but the seller stated he would combine shipping for multiple auctions won within a 3 day period. Well the coins came to a little over $80, but now the seller wants $18.60 to ship them priority mail- kinda of steep when I figure they can go in a flat rate envelope for less than $5 or even in a flat rate box for less than $9.00. What is worse, the only reason I bid on the coins is for my brother, he had already bought 10 coins when he got blocked from bidding on anymore because of a bidder block the seller had set up for relative newbies to ebay (which my brother is). He wants $13.60 to ship his ten coins as well. I asked the seller if he could ship them together even to save money ( I know that may not be what a seller would want to do- but we live in same town, same street address just different po box numbers).

Comments

  • Did the seller list a price for each additional item in the listings (ie. $5 for the first item, $1 for each additional item), or not? If he did, I would take it upon myself to reduce the shipping charge when I send payment.

    For your 15 auctions, instead of $69 ($4.60x15) he's only charging you $18.60, that's definitely a discount.

Usually when a seller asks crazy prices for multiple wins, I just bypass their postings. As you state, flat rate box is only $8.95. This guy is obviously a d#%khead who wants you too pay his EBAY fees.........Rick

It's kind of like that computer guy on TV that gives away the "free" how-to computer disc but charges $6.95 S&H.

In this case, if he clearly stated $4.60 S&H per auction, you're not really in a position to complain unless you made some different agreement with him prior to the auctions ending.

Maybe around 15.00 would be around what I pay for similar buys BUT, one must take into account the packaging and the sellers time to ship. I would pay and move on. The time to work out details is BEFORE you bid. Anyway no sense risking a neg. for such a small amount.

I would ask him (the Seller) that question through the Ebay message channel. There is a shipping charge channel and ebay montiters it. Ebay frowns excessive shipping charges.

No he did not state a price for each additional item in auction, only that he would combine shipping for items won within 3 days, didn't sound that bad. Normally I would have asked what the additional shipping would have been, but my brother only got a hold of me to bid minutes before the auctions were ending and there was no time to ask seller- it was late Saturday night.

You could report to e-bay that he charges excessive shipping. Or at least threaten to since it is against the rules.

Although if there is substantial insurance necessary then you are out of luck and as someone else mentioned he did substantially reduce shipping from what it could have been.
  • I think he is giving you a discount. Yea Flat rate is cheaper. If you didnt ask for a discount from him before. He could have charged you more. Give your guy a break. See if he delivers like stated.

If you dont sell on eBay you don't understand the fees.

I had a similar situation a few weeks ago. spotted some coins just before they were going to end. Not enough time to ask questions.

Seller ended up wanting $10 per item on 7 items!!! When I spoke to an ebay rep. they looked over the listings and told me "While the S&H is certainly on the excessive side, you agreed to his terms when you bid on his items"...

The rep went on to suggest that I contact the seller by email or phone and see if we could work out a more reasonable charge. He ended up coming down to a much lower figure but I still paid way more than I should have.

It's too high, but less than if he didn't offer to combine. I would add him to the list of my "neh" sellers... You know, the ones who have an auction, you look at bidding, and say "neh"...

I try to charge shipping/ins that is close to the actual cost (without knowing ahead of time) and am usually within $1 either way (I lose more than I gain).
However, I do know that if someone went whining to ebay about my auctions, ebay had better cancel the auction after the fact because there is NO WAY in he** that I would want to do that person a favor.

  • I had a beautiful raw 64/65 Columbian half up on the bay this past summer with an $8.95 ship rate that included priority and full insurance. Had some lady contact me about 3 days into the auction telling me she would have bid on my item, but my shipping was "way too high". Went on to tell me she had bought the exact same coin several times and never paid more than $3.95 on any of them for shipping. I looked at her feedback and sure enough, saw about 5-6 badly cleaned washed out EF Columbians, none of which she paid more than $12 for. I tried to explain that my listing would bring well over $100, and shipping insurance isnt a free service offered by the post office. She still couldnt understand my "excessively high" fees. Some people just have no clue.

I would not consider the tone of the conversation I had with the ebay rep as "whining" ...I was simply inquiring as to the actual ebay rules...

I had NEVER had any seller try to overcharge me and I have made many purchases on ebay. I would say I was shocked when I saw the invoice.

To be honest, I should add that there was no way in he## I was going to pay $70 S&H. If push came to shove, I would have accepted NPBs on the whole deal rather than pay such an absurd amount.

As a seller, the most I have ever charged for S&H was $18...that was for a package I sent out today... 1st Class, Insured, Registered w/ Sig Conf ... actual cost was $18.21... for almost $2000 in value...

Soooo...when someone tries to charge me $70 for less than $700 in value...well, call it whining, if you must...but there is absolutely NO WAY I'm going to pay that...

I do sell on ebay and when I do sell coins I do basically the same as this seller- $1 dollar each additional item, but stop at what a priority flat rate box charge is - haven't seen too many coins that couldn't fit one. I think I am going to ask him to ship them first class mail- he said he also offered that option for cheaper shipping- at least that way he will have to use his own packing supplies image . And I'm sure neither my brother or I will be buying any more coins from him!

<< <i>It's your own fault. If the seller didn't specify the discount for each additional item, you should have asked before bidding >>

Actually not mine- my brothers- he got me into it- his coins. I just feel this guy is giving him the shaft on the shipping.

On a side note while checking to see if any past complaints, I did just note something funny in his feedback- one of the coins he sold Saturday night- and I am talking late Saturday night - after 10pm, a 38-D half, that I also bid on for my brother, has already gotten him positive feedback as a seller? Earliest he could have possibly mailed it would be today, so how can the guy have already left him feedback? The post office must be real fast where he lives.

Yes, it's higher than it should be, but a lot of sellers charge a set fee like $1 for each additional coin or item won, so I don't think it's a total rip off.

Why is it always the same old "sh*tty seller" and "crooked seller!" replies around here?

The seller *did* combine shipping... just not as much as the OP wanted. If there was any doubt as to what combined shipping would be, why were there no inquiries made prior to bidding or buying? The buyer bears some responsibility here as well.

Considering that Heritage, Teletrade, and other auction venues routinely charge that much to ship one coin, I guess they should be tarred and feathered too? No of course not... we don't mind that double standard around here. It's perfectly fine for an established B&M dealer to charge exorbitant S&H. After all, they're a real business which makes it all ok.

<< <i>What is worse, the only reason I bid on the coins is for my brother, he had already bought 10 coins when he got blocked from bidding on anymore because of a bidder block the seller had set up for relative newbies to ebay (which my brother is). >>

And this is the seller's fault exactly how? image

As far as the request to ship both your and your brother's separate auction purchases together: no way in hell (assuming you're paying with PayPal). Why? By shipping both together, the seller leaves himself vulnerable to a PayPal chargeback on whichever payment does not have the tracking number associated with it. Multiple payments = multiple shipments. Period. EOD.

Multiple eBay userIDs = separate payments, so making a single payment after the fact would not work either (or it would raise big red flags in the mind of the seller).

Bottom line is that you (or your brother) should have contacted the seller IN ADVANCE and asked how best to proceed on a large-volume purchase. Trying to arrange things on your own terms after the fact simply doesn't cut it... sorry. image

No really? I am not stupid, I asked him/told him just split the shipping between the two auctions and we will each pay with our own paypal accounts. The stuff is just bullion basically, where not talking the high end market stuff here, where I where would want more secure packing and not have any problem with a higher rate of shipping. My brother tried to contact the seller earlier, he was slow in responding, as he is now as well, and it wasn't till auction was over. In the end where going to end up paying over 32 dollars to have 25 half dollars shipped to same building. I'm guessing they will probably arrive in a flat rate envelope or two based on the initial $4.60 per auction shipping listed via priority mail.
  • TwoSides2aCoinTwoSides2aCoin Posts: 44,441 ✭✭✭✭✭
kevin,... Next time you want bullion, go list an ad on the Buy Sell Trade forum. The guys around here are usually very generous and most will sell you what you want for less than playing on ebay or elsewhere. A lot of times they pay shipping.
  • I asked a seller about combined shipping discount when I was buying 4 different items from him. He was willing to give me a better deal on the combined shipping charges. If I hadn't asked I bet he would of charged what he listed.

Try to remember to get the seller to specify next time. Also keep in mind when he has someone send him an email saying they are interested in buying multiple items it gives you a little more leverage.

You are getting them shipped for $1.24 each instead of $4.60 each, so the seller clearly provided a significant discount in combining the shipping. Is it still steep - Yes. Is it much less stepp than if you bought only one coin - Yes.

  • I think you are being screwed by the seller- plain n simple.

you won what 10 auctions + an additional 15 and his shipping is $4.60 per item. i'm going to imagine that he was sending this to you via priority mail- becuz that is the going rate right now for PRIORITY. so with the 15 items at 4.60, lemme see here a moment- that would be 69 bucks my friend, then let us add the other 10 coins at the same price of 4.60- ummm that will be 46 dollars total- so your grand total is.....$115.00 - 25 coins right?

So by him coming down to $18.60 you feel that is excessive..18.60 / 15 or 1.24 a coin- damn that is just highway robbery.

I think EVERY one who sells on ebay should ship the items for FREE with insurance and have it delivered by the very next day at the least- wether I have paid you for it by check, fake money order, or a paypal account that I can turn around and demand my money back instantly becuz you MR. SEller of the coin- were to damn high on your shipping cost- and I don't give a hoot if the post office is 29 miles from your home- MOVE closer to the friggin P.O.!!

So Mr ebay buyer of the 15 coin (half dollars I might add)- you need to tell this guy you are mad as hell and you won't take it anymore..

    or any less.

Do I sound a bit sarcastic?

You said it, never thought buying cheap coins would be the problem on ebay- always worried about the expensive stuff.Have to add he just emailed and said it was a mistake and will ship the coin out tomorrow, so hopefully all will be done and over with this seller by next week. By the way, the shipping on the envelope I recieved today- $4.60, it was not in a flat rate however. Be glad when its done, I guess I have been lucky in my ebay selling, never forgot to ship something someone paid for in over 1700+ sales.
  • Last time I checked $18.60 for 15 coins was very reasonable. That is just over a dollar a coin. Seems cheap to me. I would not complain but that is me. I help run our small business so I know that is very fair. BTW I would not want 15 coins coming in a flat rate envelope. They would look like trash when they got to you. Those padded envelopes are 79 cents and up even at Walmart. Most companies I know of charge a Shipping and HANDLING Fee. In our business we most of the time use a round about number say $25.00 to ship a guitar. Sometimes it cost is $24.70 or sometimes $17.00 Either way we are not goudging the shipping prices. He is not either. Move on.

Just pay it, he / she did not have to give a discount but he / she did be happy thy did. If the shipping is 4.00 8.00 10.00 if you bid you pay, I don't get it do you go to a auction house and tell them what is your cost so I can get a discount no you just bid and pay or you do not bid I don't get it. some time's I bid on a coin it's 2.95 and shipping 4.95 ea that is OK I know and I bid. If he gives me a discount great if not I was willing to pay it. I think it was worth it for me, this is a auction not a swapmet or yard sale you bid you pay you can ask but he or she does not have to do it. That does not make him or her a bad E-bayer just a good business owner. image

And no, I am not bidding on anymore coins for anyone- not even my brother! I'm hearing it on both ends and the coins aren't even for me!- I don't collect half dollars...
