Does this half dime have a shot at upgrade?

image

Got this half dime in a rattler at MS-61. Does the hit in front of liberty's nose preclude an upgrade?

Sorry about the pics- I've got to get a better camera.

I wouldn't crack it and resubmit it. All it takes is a suspected obverse field rub to come back AU58.

  • You're right- I'm thinking of sending it in as a regrade- it really looks a lot better than these garbage pictures show (taken w/my daughter's not-so-great camera). I have owned so few uncirculated coins that I can't really grade them at all. I'm ok from about 4-58 on the Sheldon Scale, after that I'm lost.image

From the larger images it does look to be better than a 61. The fields are pretty clean and the strike is pretty good, luster seems to be faily abundant. I've owned one MS61 baby bustie and the fields were appropriately "ticky".... I don't see that on your coin.

I'd advise to NOT crack the coin out. If you want it upgraded send it in still in the rattler for regrade.

it appears to have nice luster...but it is so tough to tell. Hard to tell if it is an AU-62 image or a 58 without the coin in hand. If you tilt it in the light and see breaks in the luster (top of wings or eagle head on reverse, hair curls, cap, and draperly line on the bust on obverse are good places to look), you have a 58.

Did you get your book yet to attribute it? If not, play around on this site to see if you can figure it out: Russ Logan's Collection
