anyway TO tell IF a Heritage AUCTION COIN IS BOUGHT BY HERITAGE ITSELF??

With all the talk of the crappy"update to Heritage's web listing of it's auction coins this thought came to mind .
If bidding may be subdued at 2008 FUN auction , is there a way to know if any bid winners ....is Heritage itself , for some of the auction coins ?

There is no way to tell who bought anything, unless you are sitting in the auction room and see the actual purchaser of the lot raise his paddle.

There is no way to tell who bought anything from the internet, mail bids, live internet or podium bids.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

  • What does it mean when a Heritage auctioneer states that a coin went "to the book"?

  • There is also no way to know who the consignor is ... and it is very often the auction house itself, particularly at Heritage and Stack's, not to mention Spectrum's consignments to Bowers & Merena auctions. Heritage is quite a market maker; they are constantly buying coins (including out of their own auctions), selling coins (including via their own auctions), and working the coins (resubmitting to the grading services, in which they have substantial equity positions, and where they are among the very largest customers). However, they seem to run a clean book, and I do not find any evidence that these functions are handled in anything but a proper fashion.
