What grade would you give each of these 1813 O-107a bust halves (the bottom two sets of pics are the SAME coin) and then pick the one you would choose to own and explain why.

Whoops, now I learned to read (just woke up before posting my guess)

    1) EF-45 seems like a good choice, otherwise an exceptional 40.
    2) AU-50 nice luster and slightly better than the first.

Very nice crust and die flow. I would sticker these babies!!!

The top and bottom set of pictures are TWO different coins, please grade each coin and then choose which you would want.

They Both look Nice, the first I would say PCGS graded it tough at 35, the second Id guess NGC gave it a 45. IMO

I would need to see a better photo of the second coin as the photo seems a bit washed out. The color and luster looks a bit nicer on the second coin (commensurate with the grade), however the originality of the second piece is tough to beat. tough choice

I agree with the 35/45 grading on these 2 pieces. Maybe 35/50 is possible also.
That said, I can't really compare the two due to the extremely different pics and lighting.
The look of the PCGS coin is really nice. I can't really judge the NGC coin due to the overlighting of the pic.
I would gladly own that PCGS coin in a heartbeat.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

I added the sellers pics which is another representation of the washed out appearing 1813 with peripheral toning.

Any change of opinion now as to the grade or which you would choose to own, just curious?

If you are looking to purchase one of these, you would be better off with the top coin.
    I grade this Obv. VF35-40 & Rev. XF45.
Nice original grey with luster hidden, or a choice coin, that's from the picture.

The second coin I would pass on, hairlines, old wipe with cleaning.
But it is a later state than the first, looks XF-AUish.

I'll take the top one, I don't like white salbs. It also has the look that I like in the 35 to 40 range.

I agree with what he said but could see the top one having a shot at a XF-40 holder. Based on the pictures, i'd take the first one over the second anyday.
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

Take the first one. The second one has a history of cleaning

The first one will look just like that straight on. I like it until..... I look at the reverse and see the green spots on the eagle's neck and wing.
Which is why I didn't have it sent to me.

He is one smart man that stman.

I didn't notice that problem till you mentioned it. I guess that is one reason I always like your coins....you got that eagle eye thing going at 100%.

  • Who is selling the first coin if you don't mind me asking?
  • How about EF-40 and XF-45.
