Grade My Ike ... 1977

Picked this up raw today. I give it a 65 although I am but a rookie with Ikes.

63 - I knocked it down because of the rim ding
  • very nice indeed!! - high-end 64 to 65 - see several scattered marks in primary and secondary areas - might bring it down to 64, but all in all, a great pick!! - is that the natural toning that Im seeing in the pics - nice golden hue - adds to the eye appeal for sure - I have a couple NGC MS65's and hardly any marks in main focal areas (face of IKE and Eagle) - graders are tough on IKE's, since anything higher than 65 will produce a nice premium across the board - have to have a perfect coin to get a high grade in this series - look at the pop numbers and you will see what I mean.

You're probably right about MS-65 but they really should knock it
down for the chicken scratch planchet marking around the periphery.
    This is very unattractive.

The coin is nice and this date comes very nice. I'd go MS-64.

It's close, but I think you could squeeze a 65. There is some chicken scratch around the peripheral edges that will detract from field luster when grading.
  • Problem with grading Ikes from a picture, even a good picture, is the fine long scratches that show up only on rotation. This Ike may have some. If so, along with the obvious hits and the minor rim nick, it is 64 max. If not, could get 65 if the luster is STRONG. Don't see 66 against all of my subs but have seen 66's with problems similar to this one. Rob

I would greatly appreciate it if you could post a photo of a PCGS 66 Clad Ike. This would help me get a sense of what PCGS is actually considering a 66.

The 1977 that I bought raw today is not a 66. It does have 66 clad luster but a few too many hits. 65 in my book and great for the Ike Dansco!

Well it certainly looks like a good MS65 candidate from the photo, which is quite nice BTW, but the fields on the obverse could limit it.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
