Hi I had another post earlier but now I got my digital working a little better. Any ideas what kind of wierd error I might have on this 2007 Montana Statehood Clad quarter. It is at the bottom about 5:30 below the word Dollar. Yaha

If it's part of the coin, it's a die gouge.

Your pictures are poor. Is the defect incuse, raised, flush with the field, or floating above the field?

I'm sorry, yes the pics are bad. The error looks like a piece of extra metal raise on the face. Also when I use my 10x loupe I see 2 smail marks on the right side of the raised metal on the face it seems it wasn't struck flush. The small spots are not shiny. I hope this helps. Yaha

Does the raised feature blend smoothly into the surrounding field, is there an abrupt junction with the surrounding field, or does it lie loosely on top of the field. In other words, can you insert a thin blade and lift it up if you wanted to?

No it doesn't blend in smoothly with the surrouding field, its chunky and looks like a thin blade would pop it off with some force. It looks like to me a extra piece of coin metal or what ever they used. Yaha

If it can be popped off with a blade, that indicates that it represents post-strike damage. Evidently a thin spur of metal was shaved off either the rim or the edge and pushed over onto the field.

If you are correct is it a error? If so any value or should I get a new set and send this one back. Yaha

I don't see any gouge on the edge, so it might be a shaving off of another coin that remained behind in the striking chamber.

I can't be sure about my diagnosis without actually examining the specimen.

Post-strike mint damage is not a minting error. It's just damage and serves only to detract from the value of a coin.
