The eagle has 7 tailfeathers as opposed to 8, which is how the reverse dies were made for the first several months of Morgan production. In general, the 7TF coins are more common (and less valuable) than the 8TF coins.
    When in doubt, don't.

There are more or less four different reverses for 1878. First was the 8TF, then the 7/8 TF (some of which look like 7TF), then the 7TF, which has 7 tailfeathers, a flat breast on the eagle and all feathers on the arrows parallel to each other. This is the most common 1878 reverse. There is also the "reverse of '79," which is also a 7TF reverse, but with the top arrow feather slanted and a rounded breast on the eagle. This is the reverse design used through 1904.
