1793 Cent - A Classic Coin Question

wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,980 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was just admiring some of the early Mint sets in the Registry and I came across one of the 1793 Mint sets that had a VF35RB cent in the slot.

How far down the grading scale can the RED BROWN designation logically go in your opinion?

  • Logically, I wouldn't think it would go past XF.

I remember the good 4 red 1922 Plain. Of course it was brown, but the low life owner claimed it was "red in the registry" when he was selling it.

I suspect it has the wrong PCGS number associated with it, thus a RB. I can see the designation on AU coins, perhaps a XF.

Mark Feld just let me know that he is unaware of even an XF grade in true red brown for that date. Thanks Mark.

It's a cert error. I think that coin has been discussed before and pics were included.

  • To the best of my knowledge, the designation is not used beneath MS60.

Can anyone show a photo of a legitimately RB coin in an AU58 or lower RB holder?
