Best way to snipe a dutch ( multiple item ) auction?

Not long ago, I made the mistake of sniping a dutch auction where I bid the highest amount I was willing to pay on ALL of the items. After I won I realized I was about 25% higher than the second-highest bidder, so I ended up bidding much higher than necessary to win the items (and thus didn't get as good a deal as I could have).
Since proxy-bidding rules apparently don't work the same in a multiple-item auction, I wondered if there was some work-around...
My thought is this: say I want all 10 of the items that a seller has, but no bids have been placed yet. If I'm lucky, I could win all of the items for the opening bid price, but I don't want to take that chance of being outbid, nor do I want to needlessly bid too high if it turns out I didn't have to. So I am thinking I can work around this problem by doing 2 separate snipes: The first snipe would be made in the last ten seconds and would be for all 10 items at the opening bid price. The second snipe would come in at the last five seconds, but this one would be for only 9 out of 10 of the items at my "real" highest maximum bid. If it all works outs out the way I want it to and no one else bids against me, I should end up with all 10 items at the opening bid price, since the final price is determined by the second-highest bidder's amount (in this case, my own). Would this idea work, or is eBay's program not going to let me bid against myself in this manner?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
