Roy Campanella signature

Hi guys --

In going through my husband's collection, he has a framed piece with a copy of the Life magazine cover that featured Campanella after his accident and a signature cut. In going through one of his old Becketts, I'm noticing there's a big difference in price between his signature pre-accident and post-accident. Are there significant differences between his signature pre/post accident? How do I tell what I have?

I believe that post-accident, he has like a stamped signature. Pre-accident is obviously an actual signature. Maybe some experts could chime in, but I believe that's what it is.

  • I'm thinking I might have a pre-accident signature -- it looks quite normal, nice penmanship, blue pen, etc...
  • I did some more checking online and it's definitely a pre-accident signature... Thanks much image

I've heard that his wife did a lot of the post accident signatures.
  • Interesting - there is an envelope on the back that states "Roy Campanella's signature." I pulled up a few pre-Campanella signatures online and they look identical to what I have. I'll have to pull out the wife's envelope and see if there's anything in there too...

My husband had so much stuff -- it's like a treasure hunt going through everything... Fun but sad too image

Here's an example of Campanella's autograph on the 1954 Bowman card, while this is printed, it is a good example of his signature - this is considered "pre-accident".

Here is an example of a "post-accident" signature...he used a brace and his wife would usually help guide his hand.

There are many fakes around, many are easily recognizable, however there was reportedly a Brooklyn Dodger clubhouse employee who signed many autographs for both Campanella and Jackie Robinson, mostly on team balls.

Perkiomen - I am sure that Moosedog and others could really help you if you could post a scan of the autograph.
