Who likes "No Return Policies"?

Although I can understand why sellers wouldn't want to mess with returns, I don't like it. I think it drives business away. Am I alone?

One Ebay seller offers many (what looks like) nice Barber quarters, but won't take returns. It kills me, but I won't bid on any of them.

Here's one I liked.

  • I wont accept returns on any bullion items, its too volitile. I dont want "speculators" buying an ounce of gold from me, and then asking to return it for a full refund 7 days later because gold dropped $15/oz. Coins on the other hand I welcome back with open arms. No questions asked.

i'd never buy from someone with that policy. there are way too many GOOD risks out there.

While harsh, he is correct. I dont think Heritage takes returns, or am I mistaken? However, it would behoove a seller to accept returns simply because his items will garner more bids. More bids= higher closing prices. Besides, unless the dealer is selling pure junk and knows it, why wouldnt you want to make sure your customer is happy?
  • I can understand not returning bullion, proof sets etc. but coin pictures leave alot to be desired as far as detail and luster. You almost have to give a return. My humble opinion!

Heritage has a no return policy for signature auctions, but they do offer a return policy for their online only auctions. I think it's three days.

Personally, when I buy a coin in a no reserve auction, I don't expect to be able to return it. That said, in reference to the auction linked in this thread, I wouldn't bid anyway. Not because of his no return policy, but because the images are too small to make any kind of a reasonable assessment of the coin.

I put a short return, am always willing to work with someone if longer is needed, but I do have "no returns" on unopened items.
I would rather have slightly lower proceeds than have a headache from some of the folks I have seen people here have to deal with image

The funny ones are sellers that sell slabbed coins then say they take returns but have fine print that says "no returns on slabbed coins".

I state no returns unless I misrepresented an item (e.g. put wrong picture in). That being said, I have accepted about six to ten returns for other reasons when the buyer is decent about it.

I agree with Russ 100%, but because of all the people who complain about returns (here on this site), I have added a return on my auction.

  • I sell 99.9% PCGS and a few NGC in my E-Bay Store. I Always use Supersized Picture Packs in My Listings. I Had a Return Policy for many years, but there came a time when i had a rash of buyers that would receive their Coin, and write back and say "I'd like to know if you have a Better one" then this? Soo i started actually sending coins back and forth for "Approval" and became tired of that. I have since gone to a No return Policy On PCGS or NGC Slabs. I am considering changing back to a return Policy but i don't like being manipulated by a small number of buyers that think nothing of wanting to basically go through your whole inventory until they find a coin they Like. Even though I have a No Return Policy in Place, i Have yet to stiff anyone that was not happy with their purchase. I've even refunded Full shipping and Insurance in most cases. Agreed, adequate pictures are paramount in the bidding process. And judging by the pictures I see here on the board, I certainly see the rationale for a no return policy by members. Ebay sellers can certainly learn something here.

However, there's been too many times where I've won a auctions that had cleverly deceptive photos or least it sure seems that way. I get the coin and see minor corrosion other imprefections that should have been mentioned. I really never expect a return on slabbed coins.

I will say though, that the coins I have returned are received in a pleasant and professional manner by the sellers.

I just threw this issue out to see how others felt.

For me a lot depends on the quality of the seller- some sellers are good people, and offer good pics of good coins- so if they don't want to accept returns I might still bid. But some sellers are just shady, and it's pretty easy to spot their use of "no returns" as a method to stick people with crap coins...

I seldom even consider bidding when I see a "no returns" policy on raw coins, especially when the photos are fairly small and/or weird/gold/brown colored like this seller's are, or if they're blurry, etc.

I don't bid on slabbed coins with out-of-focus or small pics. either.

for dealers or companies - big timers/those with a lot of inventory --- I can see accepting returns with a small restocking fee. They are used to/and can afford to let coins out on approval, etc.

That said, I don't take returns because I am not a dealer, and I just don't want to mess with it. A 'real' auction - you bid you own - no returns. eBay is an auction, so I don't see that this should be a problem. If you don't want to own it -- do not bid. I don't operate a service to own upon approval. If you do that, you lose your fees to eBay, Paypal, shipping cost, and it turns into a big hassle and possible sticky mess. I am happy just not going there.

I bid the same way I sell - if I don't want to own it - I do not bid. I don't send items back.

I have only returned three coins out of 267 transactions.

Sometimes when I get the item, I realize that it does not

really fit in with my collection. I like to deal with folks who

will allow returns no question asked. I can accept a

modest restocking fee policy. However, while any seller has

the right to refuse returns if so stated in their policy, I will refrain

from bidding on lots from such sellers.

When buying a car some years ago, the dealer told me that he

did not have to sell the car to me at my price. I answered that that is true,

but it is also true that I did not have to buy the car from him at his price.

It really depends a lot on the context:

Ebay vs. Heritage vs. fixed price (for example)

    Raw vs. slabbed

    Photo quality

    Price

How clearly the policy is stated

    Buying vs. selling

Transaction with a fellow collector vs. dealer

    You got to be kidding...

Take the return, if it's a problem customer then black list them...

Why would you want a customer to accept a coin there not happy with...?

As long as it's returned as sent, what's the problem...?

    Currently Listed: Nothing

  • I think a no return policy on slabbed coins is fine as long as there are large pictures.(Up close pictures of the coin itself)
I would have no problem buying a slabbed coin with a no return policy under these conditions.

Raw is something else. If it is a seller I know, that has a proven track record of solid raw coins, I do not have a problem.

How many of you would refuse a return from a repeat customer even though a no return policy is listed?

I would grant it because I would expect to continue to get more business from him. In addition I would be inclined to cover his shipping.

I have never bid on a no return sellers items, will not. I offer a raw coin return, only had one return in 4 years, good pictures and an accurate description will do that. No returns on slabs, bullion, rolls, or sets in books. I have seen no reason to accept slab returns because it is in my opinion more of a commodity at the point it is slabbed, big 4 only. Raw coin? No questions asked if in original holder.

I offer no questions asked on coin returns....full refund including shipping. I've found that those bidders that
were watching and maybe bidding but lost out are still there and still looking for a similar coin, and when
I relist, they come back even stronger that the first time. Inveritably I get more money 2nd time around.
No returns on rolls, slabbed or mint products, tho.
