GSA Certificates: What is an "MU" card?

I recently listed a non-CC GSA coin for auction. Someone emailed me and asked if I would sell the "MU" card separately.

Are these cards worth a big premium? This is the card that came with the coin when I bought it.

  • Tim - The particular card (MU) that you asked about came with some coins that were for minimum bid of $5.00. I have understood these to be sold for as much as a hundred each. They were few, and far between. You can research GSA cards sold on EBAY to see what they sell for individually.

I've handled a few non-CC GSA's over the years, but have never seen one of those cards. As popular as GSA collectibles have become, I would strongly suggest that you keep the card and sell it with your coin and raise the price of your coin.

    Thanks for the info, guys.

I searched "GSA MU" on eBay and nothing came up. I'll try some other searches.

I just listed the coin last night and did not put in the description that there is an MU card included in the auction.

    There are a few options:

    1. I can end the auction and relist it describing the auction as including an MU card.
    2. I can end the auction and relist it without the MU card and sell the card separately.
    3. I can let the auction keep going and sell for what it sells for.

What do you guys think I should do?

I sold 11 non GSA Morgans awhile back, none with MU cards. I'm certain the card would bring higher value . image

"MU" = Miscellaneous (or 'mixed') Uncirculated. A category in the GSA sales for non-CC coins that GSA considered uncirculated. All of the uncirculated GSA coins I bought back then have this card with them. At the time, I recall collectors complaining about the banged up coins GSA was putting in holders.

I was thinking about ending the auction so that I could relist it and include the MU card info in the title of the auction. That way people who are searching can see it.

These non CC GSA'a are hot. I sold a group a while back, and some of the prices shocked the hell out of me.

    I'm hoping!

I have a few others that I was thinking about getting certified. Were your coins graded?

Wouldn't it be really easy to perfectly counterfeit MU cards? I think so, and wouldn't pay anything for them for that reason.

The ones I sold were NGC graded. They're actually the 11 that Duiguy referred to. I'll dig out the spreadsheet and post prices in a minute.

    Yoiks!

Were they all hard packs? Some of mine are soft pack.

Did they have the MU cards? Did you include black boxes (I don't think they were issued in boxes)?

  • The MU card came only with the non-Carson City GSA Morgan silver dollars in the black hard packs. The package says "United States" on top, rather than "Carson City." It stands for "Mixed Uncirculated." Most of the cards were simply thrown away by the buyers of the coins, and there are not that many left. I have seen the cards sell separately on ebay for $50 to $100, with an average of around $60-$70. A coin for sale with the MU card included will sell for a premium due to the inclusion of the card. If you list the coin with the card, make sure you mention the MU card in the title.
