OK copper collectors a few ???????????????

I just recvd today a 1854 Large cent, and it is a SEGS (I know, I know) ms-63 and the coin is really sharp, and the price was real good $160

Between the 12th and 13th star there is a small stain?

The details on the coin are fantastic, I see almost no scars, scratches, or other blemishes. It is a very clean coin, when I crack this coin out to go into my Dansco is there anything I can soak the coin in to maybe neutralize any oils or contaminents on the surface before putting it into the album?

Scratches on reverse are on the holder. Color is close, but I am having a tough time photographing this coin thru the SEGS holder.

If anyone cares to see hi-res obv/rev just lemme know and I can pm them to you.

Can you see any oils or contaminents on it. If not I would not soak it in anything.
If you think it's hard to photograph thru the SEGS holder wait till you start trying to crack it out of the Segs holder, thats whats hard image

  • That looks like a very attractive coin. I advise not touching it.

But I'm a dunce with copper.

The coin may have undergone a old time clean job that
accentuated the spot between 12th and 13th stars.
Anything you do to remove the spot will make it worse.
Looks like a Newcomb 23 and a fine coin.

Here is a much better pic after the slab was cracked.

  • Did you mucky-muck with the stain??? Something looks different and I am not sure it is just the absense of plastic.

Dip it in acetone, and if helps, fine, if not, don't worry about

Nope did nothing, just whacked the slab with a hammer, popped out the coin, photographed it, and put it in my Dansco.

The slab was awfully scratched up, I took the advice of several members here and did nothing.

    Thanks Rob

The color looks much more normal in the second image. image Soaking in 100% Acetone is all I would recommend doing. Wish you the best. image

I agree if acetone does not help leave it alone - take it out of the holder. copper should be free
