2007 Bullion American Eagles Done For The Year - Historically Record Low Sales Figures

Numismaster is reporting:

<< <i>The Mint has run out of 2007 gold, silver and platinum American Eagles for its distribution network so the November numbers are it for the year. >>

Going by the US Mint 2007 Sales Figures and previous year bullion final mintage figures. The final figures for the AGE APE bullion are the lowest ever, by around half the mintage figures of any previous year.

  • SHHH! Some of the platinum is still for sale from the mint!!image
  • I've heard that one before, about two years ago. Now look at the 2005 figures and you'll see what I mean: the gold & pt were on their way to record low sales 'til collectors caught on. Once the new year rang in the Mint posted the Dec sales figures and suddenly everyone discovered their rarity wasn't so rare anymore.

  • The Mint has been taking 2008 bullion orders since November for delivery starting Janiuary 3rd. Like the article reports, the Mint has stated the November sales totals are it for the 2007 year.

If true it's about time they learned how to count. I've never seen the Plats mintage figures right for a long time after the end of the year.
I think that's why the Red Book is a few years behind in their mintage figures because like the mint reps they can never be fully trusted.
  • The sales figures may include the previous years issues sold into the next year reported sales. Since the Mint is claming there are no 2007 bullion sales in December, I would expect the final mintage of the 2007 bullion to be less than the reported sales figures.

  • I guess that's why the 2007-W platinum sales have been flat. The non-W bullion coins may actually be rarer image

The first sales of 2007 items are recorded in the December sales figures. So the number will be considerably higher than what you're seeing in the Mint's sales figures for 2007 calendar year. Happens every year.

As of the other day, I could have purchased 3,000 fresh $10 MS Plats from 2007 - already produced by the Mint and not figured in those sales figures I believe (as they are currently unsold).

Who wants me to pick them up for you (assuming a "big spender" didn't just grab them)?? LOL

The Mint started striking 2008 Eagles in December 2007. Likewise they started striking 2007 Eagles in December 2006.

Mintage sales from Jan 07 - Nov 07 don't represent the total sales for 2007 - factor in the December 2006 figures and you are in the ballpark.

Yes, that's correct. But for the current year, they are showing sales figures, not mintage figures. A significant amount of 2007 dated pieces were included in the December 2006 sales tally.

I don't know how he can say that since it is December 13th and I just ordered 10 1/4 ounce Proofs with no problem.
  • Hey there Mitch, are you keeping your website updated? And what about the MS69 coins I used to buy from you, where do I find them now?

Fountainhead - After my webmaster passed away, I have not kept it updated. I would like to find someone to handle that - in fact you just gave me an idea.

Just send me a PM on MS69's and I can share what I know on the specific coins you are seeking.

  • The Real issue to point out is that the Mint SOLD out of the AGE Proof $25 Coin (short) @ 9,599 which is about 5,400 Coins BELOW the projected not to exceed Mintage of 15,000 .

That means using the same ratio, the the AGE Proof $10 Coins scheduled at 16,000 Coins should sell out at just over 10, 200 Coins.

The sales for the the AGE Proof $10 Coin are at 9,879, so only about 400+/- left?

CoinBoy, we're talking about the Unc bullion issues here, not the proofs or "W"s. An interesting story indeed! The 1/10 oz number, for instance, now stands at 3,000. If that holds, it will seriously test the question of whether anyone is collecting these or not.

  • Whelp, with Unc Plats still for sale, his statement is just not true.

However, I would look at the $25 AGE Proof, too.

That early sell out on a low number below allocated Mintage is significant news and not stated by NN.
  • Anybody have a link to the 2006 AGE Proof final mintage.....could not find it on the mint site........

The sales figures may include the previous years issues sold into the next year reported sales. Since the Mint is claiming there are no 2007 bullion sales in December, I would expect the final mintage of the 2007 bullion to be less than the reported sales figures.

Not really. This happens every year. You have to add part of the sales figures from December of 2006 to the 2007 numbers if you want to be close to the final figure.

There were 18,010 $25 Platinum coins made in 2004 although there were only 18,000 sold.
There were 12,013 $25 Platinum coins made in 2005 although there were only 18,000 sold.
There were 12,001 $25 Platinum coins made in 2006 although there were only 7,800 sold.
There were (unknown) $25 Platinum coins made in 2007 although there were only 5,400 sold.

When the month is over, there will numbers in the December 2007 column. Those numbers will account mostly for 2008 dated bullion. The 2007 may in fact end up being very low in the end; but, the rational being used to predict that is a little off. This happens every year.

Coinboy, the coins the article is talking about are the bullion issues. Not the proofs and not the uncs you can order from the Mint. These are the regular bullion coins.
