Unpleasant Transactions and Forum Members

I feel like ranting about unpleasant transactions and forum members.

There have been a number of unpleasant transaction threads. Most tend to be argumentative, and they tend to involve a forum member and an outsider, either directly or indrectly.

If I may, I would like to make a few comments.

1. Outsiders are people too. Please try to see that they have their own viewpoints, and that any opinions/reasons that they may have, though sometimes far-fetched, should be considered.

2. Use of English Language. Please also try to understand that not everybody writes in proper English. In addition, just because they don't write in proper English doesn't make them any less worthy of our full and complete consideration.

3. Expertise. Not everyone in the world is a numismatist. We should try to educate instead of bashing everyone who sells items that we would not purchase ourselves.

That is my rant of the day.

Thanks.

Good points Mike. I have learned that a modicum of good cheer

    and good natured comment

can often turn away wrath. Folks have just got to understand .that

we are all here to learn and have a good time. Folks are entitled to their

opinion. I do not always have to agree, but I usually can differ with

a little bit of good nature and friendliness. Life is too short to get ones

shorts all bunched in a knot.

    I concur with Bear

I think it's also imperative to space your typed

sentences with a full line space between each.

I'm not sure how Bear does this automatically

But I am very envious all the same! image

Good point, and all too easy to forget here in "our own little world".

<< <i>2. Use of English Language. Please also try to understand that not everybody writes in proper English. In addition, just because they don't write in proper English doesn't make them any less worthy of our full and complete consideration. >>

Another good one. But dang, smoetimes they're so FUN to mock!

<< <i>3. Expertise. Not everyone in the world is a numismatist. We should try to educate instead of bashing everyone who sells items that we would not purchase ourselves. >>

Excellent. But again, my same comments apply... it's hard to resist ridiculing some folks!

Seriously, though, you're 100% right. It's sometimes too easy or too fun to ridicule the educationally- or numismatically-challenged folk out of an inflated sense of our own self-superiority, but what comes around goes around, and we've all got certain areas in which WE happen to be the dummies or the uninitiated.

I for one, if this reminder sinks in properly, shall endeavor to remain good-natured and not mean when poking fun at such folks. image

  • This is a great observation Mike and one that I can tell everyone puts me in a lurker status as look at my duration as a member in comparison to the number of posts I have made. I consider myself a very well educated and knowledgeable person but I do not know everything for sure and numismatics are not my total life but they are a big part of it as I have a strong passion. I am a collector not a "Hannibal Lector" when it comes to numismatics but I have observed the fury unleashed on many newbie’s who have tried to express their opinions here with it getting extremely personal and hurtful at times. Can't we all just respect each others opinions and understand that we all have our own likes and dislikes? It's perfectly ok to disagree and express ones contradictory opinion but adding personal insults to responses to others posts when not posting them in jest is just disgraceful IMO. I even copied and pasted my response in MS Word doing a spell check in order to prevent the wrath of grammar and spelling critics here. I applaud your observations and this post.

Yah, none of was born knowing anything except how to breathe and poop. All of us have made errors in numismatic judgment as we were learning. I know I'd rather have someone let me know how I made a mistake so I can learn from it, not merely call me a moron who should have known better (even if I am in fact a moron who should have known better). The fact that someone is coming on this board, especially a newbie, means they are interested in learning. (The gloating about rips usually doesn't come until later.)

You have to admit, though, that a seller trying to sell a Good or worse Indian cent for, say, $1 million or so, really has no clue. I would think anyone considering auctioning an item he/she thinks is of great value should do some simple, basic research, such as looking at what similar items have sold for previously. This simple action would save seller fees, time, and most importantly, would save the seller from being bashed.

Good point- some people invite ridicule by acting ridiculously...

At the risk of creating one of those unpleasant experiences, the OP is discussing unpleasant interactions, not transactions, so far as I can tell. In my experience, most forum member-forum member transactions are quite pleasant and meet or exceed the expectations for both parties.

Actually, I was referring to transactions/interactions between forum members and those who are not forum members, e.g. eBay transactions where one party is a forum member and one is from the "general public".
  • Excellent thread.

I am learning so much here on the different Forums, and sometimes spend a lot of time in the evenings trying to catch up on events of the day.

  • I momentarily lose some respect of the opinion (but I will never call anyone on it) when an otherwise knowledgable poster uses improper grammer or cannot spell a simple word (that apparently is not a typo).
