Prez dollars and my 7th grade class

In my 7th grade American History class we are currently covering the Lewis and Clark expedition, so I stopped at the post office on the way to work and put a $20 bill into the automated stamp machine and bought 60 cents worth of stamps. Usually the machine gives out a decent mix of the dollar coins in change, so of course I figured I'd get at least one Sacagawea to pass around the classroom.
Instead I got 19 brand new James Madison dollars! I had to laugh, and continued to school with the left side of my pants slightly lower than the right due to the weight of all the coins.
Since we have in the past couple of weeks covered the writing of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, as well as the formation of the Democratic-Republican Party, I figured that I'd pass around the Madison coin. The responses were really funny.
Many of the kids wanted to know if you could actually buy anything with the coin! They didn't accept at first that it was actually worth a dollar!
Other comments were made about Madison's hairstyle. One student pointed out that he had an extremely receding hairline (which, if you look at the coin, does in fact seem pretty exaggerated) and said he "looked funny".
Another student said that "his eyes are scary, and he looks possessed". They are pretty deeply cut.
By the end of the day, most of my 19 dollars were gone, as many of the students wanted to trade a dollar bill for one of the coins. Before today I was not a huge fan of the design of the dollar coins, but seeing them through my student's eyes has made me appreciate them in a different way.
Who knows, maybe one of the students who wanted the dollar coins will get the coin "bug"!

I have yet to run into someone that didn't like the new presidential dollar coins! Despite the mints publicity campaign, a lot of folks are just not aware that these even exist!
Hopefully, you ignited the fires of a future coin collector! Maybe there's a future Q. David Bowers or a David Hall in your class! You just never know.
The name is LEE!

great story! i'm surprised to hear that you got buck coins from the post office. i thought i read somewhere that the po is going to stop the distribution in their machines.

My PO recently (permanently) removed the stamp vending machine (argh)....
When I play Texas Hold-em (poker) weekly, I usually tip the dealers with the "golden dollars".... and there always seems to be quite a commotion at the table amongst the players when they see 'em ~
