Penny-pinching duck world's wealthiest character Wed Dec 12, 2007 9:40pm GMT
NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - From a poor shoe shiner in Scotland to a penny-pinching billionaire in the United States, Scrooge McDuck is the world's wealthiest fictional character with a net worth of $28.8 billion.
A survey by Forbes.com said the Disney character replaces defense contractor Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks, who was killed by an improvised explosive device in Iraq in March, at the top of the annual "Forbes Fictional 15."
To make the list, candidates must be an authored fictional creation, must star in a specific narrative work and be known, both in their fictional universe and by their audience, for being rich.
"Net worth estimates are based on an analysis of the fictional character's source material, and are valued against known real-world commodity and share price movements," Forbes.com said.
Coming in at No. 2 is Ming the Merciless from the Flash Gordon comic strip, who as the dictator of the planet Mongo has a net worth of $20.9 billion. Comic, television and film star Richie Rich nabs third spot with $16.1 billion.
"Often criticized for an extravagant lifestyle, (Rich) remains unrepentant; flew an iceberg from the North Pole to Richville so friends could go skating," Forbes.com said.
Mom from the animated series Futurama takes fourth place with Forbes.com describing her as a "dangerous, ruthless competitor who will stop at nothing in her pursuit of wealth and power."
As the matronly chief executive officer of MomCorp she is valued at $15.7 billion.
Jed Clampett, from the Beverly Hillbillies television series, grabbed fifth spot as his wealth continues to soar with the rising price of oil. He is head of the hillbilly family who moved to Beverly Hills after finding oil on their farm and is worth $11 billion.
