Ike Experts- Is this 1971-S Proof a PegLeg?

And if it is, is it worth getting certified? Is there an official classification for this (for example- RDV-006 for the '71-D Ike), or is it just 'Peg Leg'...I got this for $7 at the local B&M today...as always, thanks for the help!

  • Yes- peg leg.

Get it certified only if you like to throw $$ out the window1

  • Christian, as you'll read in the January "Numismatist", yours is an un-faded Straight Peg Leg and thus the original Design Variety with the left leg in relief and flaring slightly at the foot end.

The neat thing is only 5 to 10% of the peg leg proofs are unfaded while 5 to 10 % are fully faded and the rest lay inbetween on a continuum of fade.

In a few years, the relative scarcity of the unfaded and fully faded ends of the 71-S peg leg proof spectrum may carry a premium, especially with TPG attribution.

It's a bit tricky because the unfaded Straight Peg Leg is the Design and the faded peg leg is die-state, but sooner or later it should catch on.

If you want to know what caused the fade, read the article! Rob

Yes Christian it is a Pegleg. These do not carry any premiums at this point in time but that could change. If you want it attributed, ANACS will attribute it but truth be told the ANACS slabs offer nothing in the premium world.

Have you examined the coin very closely for a DDO or DDR? My one and only ANACS PegLeg was also a very nice DDR coin.

I am very eager to read the January Numismatist as the IKE crew always provide insightfull information regarding this series and its really only a question of time before the TPG start attributing these. And by TPG I am referring specifically to NGC and PCGS.

Here's something thats interesting even though its a 1971-D and not the Proof coin:

    Now for the interesting part:

Possibly a one of a kind slab but since ICG doesn't keep pop reports, I'll never know unless somebody else chimes in.

Thanks for the great info...I'm looking forward to the article!

I may take it to ANACS anyway, as I think I need one more coin for economy...I'll keep my eyes open for the '71-D peglegs- I already look at every one of those I can find for RDV-006...
