How would you grade/price this 1802 DBH?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,798 ✭✭✭✭✭
No tricks, grade revealed later/tomorrow. I have not seen the coin in person. It is slabbed by PCGS, and to the best of my knowledge, Longacre, there is no sticker, and I do not know if it has been submitted.

Looks like a decent enough tough date. Image looks familiar, if it is an image of who I'm thinking I already know it's overpriced.image
I would have to wonder what's going on under the left wing facing. Might be on plastic, might not.

The images make it look gorgeous! I would have to side with a VF20/25 grade on this one. The price is going to be steep if you are looking at Greysheet and I would think it would take $3,500 or thereabouts to obtain the piece.

I think it should obtain a 25, but anything higher would surprise me.

  • 25-30. Price? Too much for a type collector to care about. I'll just settle for that model in '06 or '07 trim for about $650.image

    Put me down for 25-30.

The coin is in an ICG VF-25 holder and is offered at 10% higher than Trends for VF-20. There is a very steep rise in Trends for this date, from $4000 in 20 to $10,000 in XF-40, and this is an example, for me, of the difficulty in determining the accepted retail price of a coin that falls in between the stated price points. Heritage auction results suggest that this offering price is probably in line for the stated grade, so long as there are no problems not seen in the image.

All that said, I would have graded this coin lower and obviously have a lot to learn before I get serious about collecting this series!

Sounds okay to me. A 10% premium over the VF20 trend price for a VF25 coin seems all right, particularly as it is a nice original-looking piece from where I sit. And it's in plastic, even if it's second-tier plastic. I would trust ICG on a circ type coin. It's just in the MS/PR supergrades that I lose confidence in them.

I don't care for the look of this one. The rub on the face like that just doesn't work for me. Here's a 30 I used to own, wish I still did.

    real grade = vf-25
    slabed grade = xf-40

this assumes those are adj. marks, not scratches

RYK, what would you grade this coin? Also, I think DK has a point about the coin being something that you might want to think about unless you are determined to go with a bigger splash such as an EF or AU.

But would you sticker it at 25? How about 15? image

RYK, what would you grade this coin?

I was thinking 15, shot 20. I need to get more experience in grading these, or it looks like I will never get to buy one. image
  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
I would have called it a 20. Personally, I don't like the look of the coin. A little too dark for my tastes.

If I were looking for an 1802 half at this time...... I would seriously consider this one. Even though in your OP it said slabbed by pcgs, and now you say icg. But, then you would probably go through the agony of getting it crossed, and the harassment from Longacre on the sticker deal. So many issues to consider.image

I was mistaken about the holder in the OP. Sorry about that. It is an ICG holder. Nonetheless, the coin is the coin (we should have a Latin translation for that image ). I am just trying to learn about the series. I am not in the market for an 1802 50c at this time, but if I were, the holder would not deter me, nor would the lack of a sticker. I think that I am thick-skinned enough to tolerate Longacre's derisive comments. image

Since you showed the image on the forum when it is still for sale..... I didn't think you would be looking to buy it. image

  • A very attractive coin. I like the lighter contrast on the devices and the overall look. I'm not an expert on grading early half dollars, but on an equivelent basis as a draped bust large cent it would grade an EAC raw F15+ details, IMO. I don't think VF 20 is unreasonable for the coin, however.

Lucky for you it is in an ICG holder, and therefore we don't even reach the question of stickerability. image

I need to see if I can come up with the Latin for "the coin is the coin". That would be pretty neat. Maybe I should call Stack's, where I hear Latin is still used in the office on a daily basis. image

VF30, and I'd be honored to have you buy it for me. Quite generous of you.
