No good deed goes unpunished

I came home today to find an email from a buyer in my inbox. He was unhappy because he felt I overcharged him for shipping, and that he thought I should be able to be mail a $200 slabbed coin for about $2.00 (I charged $5.95). I spent a few minutes replying, with an explanation of how my shipping charge was determined, and that he might also want to consider insurance costs when he figures what sellers are paying to mail coins to him. I tried to be polite and told him that it wasn't my intention to try to make my profit on shipping charges and that I hoped he might be able to understand my position.

After sending the email off, it occurred to me that his name looked familiar. Checking my records, I found that he had bought from me a month or so ago, and that I had mailed his coins via registered/insured mail ($18.50 USPS postage charge) at no cost to him as a thanks for his purchase of multiple items.

*sigh*

    Shipping just drives people wild.

I did a special with 99 cent shipping and I think people still think it was too much. I started the items from 1 cent to 7 cents.

I don't know... that may be a tad harsh- he seemed like a nice enough guy in his previous emails. I'm not sure what it is about shipping charges though- sometimes, it seems like people just don't think things through. Or they don't mail many packages themselves, and don't really have a good feel for everything that's involved.

It's discouraging at times, that's for sure.
