A hard lesson for speculators, yes -- but I betcha that we still won't let this issue fall much short of 40k total sales. There may never be a real sleeper (like a Jackie Robinson unc) in this series; just steadily declining sales.
Sleeper? Just wait until we get deeper in the series. Dolley is a relatively well known historical figure. Even as someone interested in US History and the presidents, with just a few exceptions, I couldn't even guess the names of many of the first ladies after we get past Dolley.
The Dolley Madison issue so far has done rather well on eBay, though the profits have been wrung out from the flippers.
So far a total of 95 raw Dolleys have sold. 35 proof for an average price of $594.43; 26 MS for an average price of $563.05 and 17 2 coin sets for $1157.28.
This compares with 136 TJs sold by this time after announcement and delivery back in August.
Compared with the TJ, these prices are all higher by about $40 to $50 per coin. As the mint offering price was $100 higher for each (or there abouts) profit margins are down by about half the TJ issue when you add in fees. Sales off nearly a third--flippers are even exerting caution.
Meanwhile, it's interesting to note with gold up and issue pricing quite a bit higher that you can pick up the 3 earlier spouses graded by PCGS as 69s for only the slightest premiums to issue price.--even near melt!
