Few odds and ends from the coin shop

Went to the coin shop on my lunch break and rummaged through the old foreign silver coin box. They mostly sell these coins for the weight of silver only but found a few that I thought to be nice and added to my collection. The 1902 and 1907 One Florin/2 Shilling coins do show signs of heavy wear but got them for nothing so I bought them. I love their design. The German half mark and the Swiss half franc just said to me, "TAKE ME HOME". I think the half franc has the potential for some nice toning which has already started. Now I was rummaging through the vast trays of old Canadian coins when I ran across this 1850 Bank of Upper Canada One Cent piece. Absolutely stunning design that these coins have. I love the old look and feel to the coin. Like I said these are no AU, BU, MS, or prize proof coins, but they make me smile and I enjoy them so thats all the matters. I figured I would post some pics of them so you guys could enjoy them also! Now keep in mind I took the pics in a hurry at my desk and I am not a porfessional at taking pics. Now if it were a crime scene I could have done better but I had to snap them before SGT walked down here and yelled at me!!! Lata guys!

If you are overlooking your coin shops "Foreign Box Bargain Bin" then go dig through that thing (almost every coin shop I have ever been in has one). Fun stuff awaits for those that are patient and dig through them.

If you turn the white balance on your camera to "on", your coins will look more silver and less gold.

I think the Edward VII Florin is perhaps the most underrated GB coin in terms of the design

  • That '17-A 1/2 Mark looks pretty good to me, a solid XF from what I can see of it. The 1/2 Frank looks pretty dog gone good too. Nice pick ups... Sounds like you are a lot like a bunch of us around here, if the price is right why not buy it? I have a couple of pounds of circulated silver I have picked up over the years for about melt price and it seems I keep adding to my little hoard of stuff I don't collect everytime I go to a new shop offering silver "foreign" coins on the cheap...

Yeah the half mark is actually a stunning coin in person. The store owner actually remarked, "How did that one get in there?" Nonetheless he let me have it for cheap so I was happy, not that it was an expensive coin but this was a "junk" box, as he called it. Needless to say I must go through the other 50 "junk" boxes he has...

Very cool pick-ups! That 1/2 Franc looks like it has quite a lot of luster. image

The Canadian Penny Token is neat, as well. Looks to be the "no dot between tips of cornucopia" variety, which is more common that the one with the dot. Still a great find, though.
