1954 D/D cents. A question for those who know. UPDATED WITH IMAGE

I am in the process of cherrypicking myself, and looking very closely at every coin I have (new 10x loupe!) . So far I have had 2 surprises, one of which is a 1954 D/D cent - it's a pretty clear D north of the other, and I don't see any D below as on the tripled d mintmark on coppercoins.com. I have 5 of them, though no photos yet, I am sorry. My photo skills are not great, though I will try soon.

1954 D on coppercoins.

I wish I had some photos, and I'm sorry I don't. I have a couple of questions.

1. If by some chance it is a variety listed there, how do I maximize the value? I have looked on Teletrade, and I see that it's not excessively valuable (say 25 - 40) if it's certified. However, they were cheap, and I'd like to get what I can get to finance my 7070. Is ANACS the only company that will recognize them? They are all very nice, so I think they would slab well.

2. If by another chance, it is a completely new variety, what then? I doubt this is the case, but if it is, what next? I will get photos listed (if my baby isn't born) tonight so you can give me your input, I'd appreciate it.

  • That's the one. So PCGS will grade - awesome. I did some auction research and I didn't see any PCGS.

What is the Value of your 64?

I went to my local shop and they told me they have no extra value bacause it isn't recognized by the redbook.

Sounds like the 1954-D RPM is the LDS of 1954-D RPM#1. Chuck even mentions this later die state in his book, in which the lower RPM fades and finally dissapears. Apparently the value is less for the later die states, as well. I've cherrypicked one MS example just like you described, with the strong D to the north and no D to the south.

Can't help you much on the value or slabability, although the variety seems to be fairly common. In the later die state it will probably pull a slight premium and may not be worth the slabbing fees.

Here is the photo of the date/ mintmark. It looks like there is a repunched date as well.
  • I'd say it is worth about $100 in a PCGS MS64RD slab that includes the correct attribution.
  • Looks like rpm-1, stage D or E. Likely the latter. Nice image.

  • Looking back at coppercoins.com, I dont' see anythign that matches what I have going on here.

    Am I Columbus?
  • Thanks for the image compliment. I'm still working on my setup, but I do love compliments.

So how would I send it in and request attribution?
  • Depends on who you are sending it to. Gonna try PCGS? Probably better value there, seems their attributed varieties are doing well on eBay anyway. If so, request attribution and pay the fee but include a note that says it's rpm-1. It is, but help them out, plus they won't get the label wrong. Note that it's fs-whateveritis and get that also. Me, I cover all bases, and say in the margin "please label as rpm-1, fs-lalala" in large letters so they won't miss it. Maybe the grader doesn't see it, but at least you've done all you can.

  • Any input on the FS #?

I have 6 of these, all are in the mid MS range - 63- 65 I would guess.

I am dying because they all came out of a BU roll that I bought at the coin shop and gave away to the kids in my wife's class. Who knows how many I had in the roll. I'd bet that there are a few more of these in circulation in the Wylie, TX area.

I think I'm going to go PCGS to maximize my return.
  • A little bump for the afternoon - is the Repunched date (look at the left of the 4) not something that is listed? Is this just the later die stage of the repunched mintmark?

Either way, I just have to crow.

Looks like this one to me, RPM#1 and the old FS number is 021.76
You should get a bit more than the listed price in a PCGS slab.

What you see on the date is on a lot of 54-Ds and adds no premium.

    Neat find image

You can compare the die markers to the one on Coppercoins to be sure it's RPM-001.
