Question for Capped Bust Half Experts

Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 11,552 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hello - I picked up an 1838 CBH this weekend for a friend's type set. I noticed that the second "8" in the date is strongly repunched, showing most of a bottom loop well below the actual 8. Just wondering if this is a better variety, and if commands any premium or not. If more than one variety exists with this feature, I could provide pics if needed, to properly attribute it.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I couldn't find anything, but I'll bump this up for anyone else who might be able to help.
  • I would check Jules Reiver's manscript on Reeded Edge die varieties. I believe Heritiage has it in PDF on their website.

    Ok, thanks guys.
I'll check out the Heritage site - it has been very useful in the past.

As mentioned, the Reiver VIM for RE halves is currently online and free to use if you go to Heritage. However, I would strongly caution you that most folks do not collect RE halves by die variety and that the vast majority of RE halves remain unattributed. Therefore, any rarity rankings are speculative, in my opinion, and premiums based upon these rarity rankings would be difficult to obtain. Lastly, the Reiver VIM is not easy to use and does not contain any images.
