Proof Gold: So, how much should copper spots be subtracted, if at all, from the grade?
Take an otherwise gem piece of proof gold and you notice a copper spot. Should that detract much from the Gem, lets say 66 or better, condition?

I'm definitely not an expert on this, so I'll let others decide.

If we are talking about your proof $10 Lib (the one I saw at the last St. Louis show), I was too blinded by the mirrors to notice. I would not worry about them.
<< <i>IMHO, copper spots should not affect the grade at all, although they can affect the value. >>
Are you saying that eye appeal should not be a grading factor? Copper spots definitely hurt the eye appeal of any coin.

<< <i>IMO, copper spots on classic proof gold shouldn't affect grade or value. Copper spots are a good indicator of original surfaces for old gold. A copper spot on a nice proof gold piece wouldn't bother me at all even if it was somewhat significant. >>
However, what Mr. Eureka says is true about spots affecting the value of the coin... a copper spot in a concealed area like the reeding or say imbedded in the eagles wings is less distracting than one say on the nose or cheek of Miss Liberty, and will probably bring a higher pirice. I would be careful with proof gold and enlist the services of someone very knowledgeable before buying however, as a lot of proof gold has been "enhanced"...
