Grade opinions on 1889 Vam 22 Morgan

Please post what you think this coin would grade.

Also, would it be advisable to send the coin to NCS and have those ugly spots removed from the obverse?

Thanks,

Sam

Such a strange look to that coin. Perhaps the lighting? Almost looks nickel instead of silver.
NCS can't do anything with the carbon spots. If it looks good in hand I'd give it a solid 64
but no better as reverse strike/die is so weak/worn. Nice wingbar tho.

  • MS63? It's very hard to say from the pics. The breast feathers are pretty weak.

I disagree with AUandAG here, those spots can easily be removed (as long as they haven't etched themselves into the coin yet). NCS can do it, or you might have better luck buying a container of eZest. Don't use it without consulting the forum first though.

I have some of the E-Z-Est coin dip but I'd feel safer sending it to professionals because I don't want to ruin the coin.

The breast feathers look extremely week in the picture, so I will try to take more later to show what they really look like.

    Thanks,

    Sam
