I was going to suggest a French Ecu d'or, which is the only gold I've had from that period. They're cool late-medieval gold pieces, and affordable in higher grades.

Steinberg's has a few.

As a matter of fact, this is exactly what I had. An ecu d'or au soleil.

Neat piece. King Francis I was a patron of the arts and played host to Leonardo da Vinci, I believe. Nostradamus also came from the France of that era.

For the 1600s-1700s, Dutch ducats are nice and affordable. Even back into the late 1500s. I sold a 1595 a while back.

Doubloons, as in Spanish or Spanish colonial escudos? They're out there, but you'll pay more for them, due to their popularity.
