Not familiar with the specific coin but pretty sure its Byzantine.

OK, you've had some very creative and humorous replies, so I'll give you a straight one.

It's not a Byzantine coin, though it's done vaguely in that style.

It is much more modern than that. Not a coin, but rather a medal of some sort, and a cool one.

I see PETRUS and PAULUS inscribed on the obverse, so obviously the subjects are Peter and Paul.

Can't help much beyond that, and about the coat the arms on the reverse I have no clue (but I suspect therein lies the key to the mystery).

    Best o' luck, Coinsniffer.

Struck at a Renaissance festival, maybe?

Maybe. That would make sense. It's better than any of my theories, anyway. That would explain why, though it is obviously modern, it's struck in a "medieval" style.

Interesting that there is a bishop's mitre (or ecclesiastical "crown" of some kind) at the top of the arms on the reverse, sort of like the Vatican arms. But it's not the Vatican arms, 'cause there are no keys in the design.

Actually, that appears to be the papal tiara at the top (surmounted by a tiny cross), and to the sides, there appears to be the circular ends of keys, bent down weirdly for some reason. Also, the arms are those of Pope Paul VI, so it's definitely supposed to represent the pontiff. Also, his pontificate was from 1963 to 1978, so that gives an idea of its maximum possible age.

    Wondered about that.

Well, there you go. Thanks, Iosephus. I wouldn't have recognized the arms of Pope Paul VI or any other pope, but as you can see, I was homing on the very "papal" flavor of the thing.

Bronze, maybe? I can't tell, from the color in the pics.

It does look like somebody tried to "test" the metal by scratching it on the side with the coat of arms. image

Smelling is a quite normal way to detect brass from gold plated objects, like pocket watches.

BTW, Pharmer, it's the Kinghts who SAY "Ni".
