Pocket Piece Progression Thread (New Pics)

I recently purchased this 2006 W ASE at a flea market here in town. The owner said it had been caught in a drawer??? I don't know about that, but anyways. I decided to use it as a pocket piece. Its been jingling around for almost 2 months now and has worn nicely. How long will it take for the deep scratches to wear out???

The one thing that I have learned is that real wear takes a long time unless you are on your feet a lot.

Rather than intentionally wearing it down, I think you should AT it where the scratches are to hide the damage. image

Agreed. It really makes you appreciate how much many century-old AG and G coins really changed hands and for how many years, and how hard the coins "worked"...

Measure the depth of the scratch then measure the height of the highest point on the coin. The scratch may never disappear and even if it did, I think you're looking at a 10 or 15 year commitment.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • That scratch will always be there but, I thought it was kind of funny that the original seller had it in a plastic holder with a scratch like that.

It'll be interesting to see this thread a year from now.

  • Good luck with your project! I also believe that the scratch will always be there. Why not start with a
decent piece that will look really cool some years down the road?

Here is mine, which I've been carrying faithfully for about one year now. Yes, it is a 1996 key date, which
I bought in '96, the year my daughter was born. It isn't showing much wear yet, but is starting to get some
nice dirt in the crevices! I would grade it AU55.

I think Walking Liberty halves are one of the prettiest coins in circulated state...nice VF/XF coins with that
grey tone and darker recessed areas are just yummy!

It wasn't in the AT when I got it, it was in a 2x2. Originally I was going to carry it in my pocket in the AT, but figured that would be no fun, so I busted her out and into the pocket she went. I'll update every month or so.

  • Do you carry the coin in your front or back pockets?

What else do you have in your pocket while carrying the coin around?

I am asking because I have carried around a couple of coins. I carried a coin for a couple of years in a pocket all by itself and the coin still looks MS (as it was when I started). Also, I carried a coin in a pocket with some other stuff (including coins and keys), and that coin got horribly scratched and gouged.

So back to my original question, what should be in a pocket with the coin to generate even wear and not scratches or gouges?

Why is it, "A penny for your thoughts," but, "you have to put your two cents in?" Somebody's making a penny.

It's a noble project but that scratch will never disappear with normal wear. You will still see signs of it even in P01 state although the scratch will be much more tolerable at this state.

This sounds great. Here's my new pocket piece, a BU Washington-Carver.

These pix are from eBay. Maybe by the time the coin wears some, I'll learn to take my own pix and be able to update this post.
Thanks for the good idea. This will be a fun thread to follow. image

A dozen worn roosie dimes, nothing more.
    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
  • This will be a cool thread to follow...here's one of mine I started carrying a few weeks back. Bought it several years ago for twenty some dollars as a "premium quality dmpl". image Needless to say it turned out to be a hairlined POS. image Oh well. It'll be fun to work down the details for a couple years. image

  • I just carry it in my front pocket with whatever else I have in there (other change, keys, etc.). You guys have some good choices and I look fwd to the progress of them. TennesseeDave, thats a nice one, I hope to get mine down like that.
  • In a way, I wish this were a different ASE and the 06W I carry were MS so it could go into my collection, but having a pocket piece that is more rare than any other ASE is pretty neat. Maybe when I get it worn down, it can be a $100 coin again!! I'm sure there are many that carry ASEs as pocket pieces, but I bet there's not many with an 06W. image

You have to show your pocket piece off. Make sure you show at least 3 people per day. Let them handle it, rub it and inspect it. Your pocket piece will benefit greatly.

Here's one I've carried everyday for nine years. It had been cleaned and shined when I bought it and I thought it would look more natural or original by now, but it still looks cleaned and shined - just more wear.

    It's coming along.

Another 10 years and you might have it below that nice scratch. image

I will bet you another ASE (a fresh one) that
you will lose it before it wears down.

but I am enjoying watching you try image
