Coming back after a 14 year absence

Hello everyone,

I used to be in the sportscard business full-time from 1985-1993. For the last two years, I specialized in small size football cards from 1957 to date.

How have the grading standards changed (if any) over the last 15 years or so? I sent in a submission of 1965 Topps Baseball to PSA with my 12 freebies, and I got 6's and 7's. I felt that 10 of the 12 cards were properly graded, but it seems that grading standards have tightened up in the 8 and above category, It also seems that centering is not as big of an issue to PSA as it was way back based on their criteria (when pertaining to the 7's and lower).

As for rookie cards for football HOF'ers, can you legitimately buy a nice Unitas rookie for $1K in 8? That seems high to me as it's a DP. On the other hand, a Jim Brown in 8 at $1,600 seems cheap.

Well, that's enough for this message. I would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks for listening,

Greg

Welcome to the Psa Family Greg ! Were the '65 Baseball you submitted all star cards ? As you already know , you really need to inspect your cards very closely to get good submission grades !
Here's hoping your next submission is all 10's !!!!!!!image

My eBay ID is 'gyanandroidhead", so you can look at them there as they were all star cards (including 4 Carlton rookies). One of them (a "6") is up now, and I have three more Carlton rookies going up next Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

When I bought the deal, I looked at the cards with some rose colored glasses. Once they were in the holders, the truth was a little more apparent. I am probably going to get nailed on it, but it's a learning experience.

I pride myself on being a realist, and fairly describing material so everyone involved is pleased. That's how I do my coin auctions as well.

I can remember a days when I bought solid NM-MT Unitas rookies for about $300. What's nice is when I look at the Pop Reports I was dead on with respect to what issues were tough in high grade (66 Philly Butkus, for example). Those were the days. Perhaps with a little help from this board and going to some shows I will get back into this.

Welcome Greg. Some pretty solid cards for the grades.

Here's a link to Gregs auctions.

Welcome Greg. Nice cards, but my advice would be to scan raw cards (maybe even graded too) with a dark background (leaving the scanner lid up works too) so the bidders can see the corners and edges much clearer. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I will try that and see how it turns out.

I scanned the raw cards at too high a DPI because you can see the dot pattern.

Regarding the grades, as I mentioned earlier I thought they were all pretty solid. The 1963 Clemente is very close to being a "7."

    Talk later,

    Greg
