    I'm stumped!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • Great find! Especially, the extra date.

Cool find, a die gouge, an rpm, I think, and I don't know what the stray digits are.

My first thought is that it was squeezed with a pair of soft false dies.
Please run full obverse and reverse at a more reasonable size.

I agree with Capt. Hemway -

Based on the "05" to the left of the bust area, it's
a false-die piece for that "second strike".

I first thought "copper movement" when I saw
the two Mintmarks, but Tom got it, imo.....

Can you explain what that means (never heard the term)?

I agree as well. The soft, blended overlap between primary and secondary design elements is a telltale clue.

A fake/counterfiet die was made, using a real coin,
and then it was pressed into the host or genuine
coin, giving the effect you see.

Simplest way to do it is to take a piece of sheet aluminum or brass, fold it over, place a coin between the two sides and squeeze it in a bench vise. This will leave negative impressions of the coin designs in the two sides of the sheet, that resemble dies. These are called false dies.

More the coin relative to the impressions and squeeze again. Some of the coin will emboss upwards into the negative impressions, giving a false second strike. It is usually random and incomplete.

  • OK, I'll fess up...........

Those who called it a "garage job" are right. I had a few beers last night and started messing around. I was surprised at what came out, and still have no idea where the 05 under the shoulder came from..... I was going for just the double mintmark.....

(BTW, the coin has been destroyed..... although I was thinkin' about putting in back into circulation, just kidding!!).

why on earth would you want to do that unless you are really trying to fake something? That's like saying, I was only printing off copies of $100 bills to see if I could get them to look real, but I threw them away.. Or, I smoked but didn't inhale. image You wouldn't happen to deal in trade dollars would you? Uh speaky engrish

  • << <i>you are really trying to fake something >>

Actually, I was faking trying to make a real something............. image

Beer and boredom can be a funny thing...... I had some fun, it was a challenge, I wanted to see if I could do it......... and all I was left with was a bunch of smashed pennies.

Here's another one I ended up with last night.....

    image

Bottom line is, all it cost me was about $0.58 for a couple hours of fun!! Can't get that anywhere else!!

You could sell them on eBay raw! You should submit one to PCGS and see if they grade it.
