The Patriots' perfect season will end Sunday, according to Pittsburgh defensive back Anthony Smith. The safety yesterday guaranteed the Steelers would defeat the Patriots Sunday at Gillette Stadium.
"People keep asking me if we're ready for the Patriots. They should be asking if they're ready for us," said Smith, a second-year player from Syracuse.
"We're going to win," added Smith. "Yeah, I guarantee a win. As long as we come out and do what we got to do. Both sides of the ball are rolling, and if our special teams come through for us, we've got a good chance to win."
Not exactly Joe Namath, but a bold proclamation nonetheless.
The Patriots have beaten the Steelers five of the last six meetings, including playoffs. But the Pittsburgh win, a 34-20 triumph at Heinz Field in 2004, snapped New England's record 18-game regular-season winning streak (21 straight, including playoffs).
Smith wasn't on the team then, but he was acting like he was yesterday. Here are a few more pearls of wisdom.
On the Patriots' 27-24 win over the Ravens Monday night: "They say they played their toughest game last week against Baltimore, but I think we play harder. They're going to be in for it again this week. They're going to have a tough week in front of them."
On the Patriots' receiving corps: "They've got [Wes] Welker and [Randy ] Moss, but they're not like Cincinnati."
The Steelers clamped down on the Bengals' passing attack in a 24-10 victory last Sunday. Smith better hope they can do the same to the Patriots or he's going to have a lot of explaining to do.

OK I see how this could get spun out of control. He Guarantees a win AS LONG as all that other stuff happens and finishes it off with "We've got a good chance"
This is no big deal, I will agree that the Patriots should be concerned about themselves being ready though. Like I said before if we play the same game against Pittsburgh as we did against the Ravens and the Eagles... We are toast!
better against Pittsburgh, we're goin' down.
story
I think its about time for a player to come out and say something along the lines of 'I'm sure were gonna lose, they are just way better than us.' (the Dolphins should be drawing lots to see who gets the press conference)

Difference is, Anthony Smith hasn't been exposed as a scum bag welcher.
<< <i>Who had the first successful 'guarantee?' Mark Messier in Hockey comes to mind - or was there someone before that? >>
Joe Namath in 1969 guaranteed that the Jets would beat the heavily favored Colts in Super Bowl III. It was considered to be a very
brash and egotistical thing to do but the Jets did indeed win, every "guarantee" made since then tends to get compared to that one.
This current "guarantee" seems rather weak and full of "if we do this right" kind of stuff that waters it down a quite a bit.

Joe was at a news conference and was tired of hearing about how good the Colts were and that the Jets were 17 point underdogs.
His said, " Hell yes we're gonna win. I guarantee it!"
Brought the fedgling AFL up to par with the powerful NFL and both leagues merged the next year. Rumor has it that if the Jets got blown out (like the first 2 AFL teams did) the two leagues miight never have merged. Way to go Joe.
"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
I agree that it helped put him on the map. Before he said this, most of you probably never heard of him. He's from Syracuse, talented and a hard hitter. However, he's a bit too flashy for the Steelers more conservative organization. In his rookie year, he picked off a Browns' pass. As he was running the ball back, he did a pose with the ball on his shoulder as he went out of bounds. Cowher smacked him and Lebeau got in his face to scold him. He's also gotten dumb penalties for post play behavior. Hopefully he'll learn to control his energy and focus it on making plays.

You do understand that getting the #1 seed in the AFC and then bringing home the fourth Lombardi trophy has priority over 16-0, right? So even if you do come up a little short against the Steelers, try not to lose any sleep over it. If you're going to lose one game, do it now instead of in the post-season. After all, there's no big silver trophy for going 16-0, right?

Wrong on two counts. One, it was the following year the merger took effect (the Chefs beat the favored Vikings in Super Bowl IV, which brought the AFL yet another soon-to-be-named Lombardi trophy). Two, the merger was already set and done legally, so any attempt at backing out by either side at that point would've been too major a legal headache for everyone involved.

Believe me I understand this! Im more concerned with the way we have been playing the past two weeks more than anything. I want us to beat the Steelers more so to get us back on track to playing the football that we have been acustomed too.... I dont want us to "squeek" out another win, I want us to be a dominant force out there and carry that into the playoffs! If you continue to squeek out wins with a few lucky calls or lucky "breaks" then you are destined for failure, and with the playoffs looming in the horizon that would not be good!
