Morocco Auctions Question

Just curious.... I ran across these two auctions:
Morocco 50 Centimes

Morocco 5 Francs

These seem to be going pretty high when compared to other auctions for similar coins and when checking Krause. Why do you think these are going so high? Is there something I'm missing, some variety? His auctions are nice looking, nice presentation and good pictures, but is that enough to garner such prices? Or are we just seeing a bidding war where neither side wants to lose?

No offense intended especially if the seller is a forum member, just really curious on what is making his auctions so successful.

That 5 Francs is a beauty.

  • The 50centimes is worth about a buck, the 5 francs maybe five on a good day. I can't really explain the top 3 bidders without being rude image

    Yeah.... I don't get it.

But if the underbidders are reading this please do PM me. I have at least one of each in better conditions.

One of those guys has bid on and won some of my items. Unfortunately (for me), the other two haven't showed up- yet. Here's to hoping... image

Here's another one I just don't get from same seller.

    Poland 1968

I'm not expert on Polish coins, but based on Krause and other auctions, this should be no where near this high....The seller has decent pics (notice the mark across the date on this coin) and nice looking auctions, but he seems to consistantly get good money for his coins. I don't necessarily agree with some of his grading, but I don't see anything fishy about his auctions. I just wonder how he consistantly gets so much action on his auctions for some relatively common coins.

Yeah, that's another thing I meant to comment on... he is absolutely on crack with those grades. MS66 for the crusty Moroccan 5 francs? MS67 on the Polish piece with visible dings?! And he grades "as honestly and conservatively" as he can?? Dayum.. in that case the Polish coin is surely worth it! It's probably really a PF70! he was just being modest.

Yep, those grades are quite optimistic, but the corrosion on the 5 francs couldn't be more obvious in the photo if it was painted pink with a big arrow pointing toward it. image

I've got a corrosion-free one I'll sell for $25 if the underbidder is around. image

    Yow. That's CRAZY.

    << <i>Tonight I'm also listing a similarly gorgeous, superb gem BU 1949 Polish 1 grosz. >>

Dammit- I've been giving some of those away as freebies. I guess I'd better list some, huh? I still have several.

I see the 1968 Polish coin is going home to Poland. Perhaps that coin's a variety that we're not aware of. Perhaps just another example of what his Lordship mentioned in another thread about making sure to sell internationally.

I have frequently seen the rather-geometric French Morocco designs for the 25, 50 centimes and 1 franc from the 1920s frequently make it to near 5 dollars - probably for use in coin jewelry. Never this high though.

I just found one in my bulk hoard. Guess I'd better think about listing it.
