Matte Proof Lincolns for the week of 12/8

Amazingly we have a complete list of all dates. This week we have 31 compared to 26 last week. Another week of BV increases has also come and gone. Obviously the popularity of these coins has caused price increases for THREE weeks in a row. Next big show will be FUN in Florida which keeps adding Mattes for auction. This will no doubt increase prices again in a months time.

As always, if you know of one that is sold on the list or becomes available, just PM me so I can keep the list as accurate as possible. Till next week.

Obviously sharp increases in prices are going to draw more MPL's out for sale and auction. It will be nice to see more considering how dry the last couple of years have been.

    I agree

Today, I see another green wave of price increase for the MPL cents. As more MPL's come up for auction this will help the auction achives get more up to date with the "real" market for these coins. The PCGS price guide relies more on auction records than dealer reported retail sales to adjust prices upward.

It's going to be interesting to see what the two 1916's in PCGS PR66RB go for in the upcoming January 2008 FUN auction. The last Heritage archives show a sale price of $6,900 for one of these coins. If one of the examples is solid for the grade I predict it will take over $10,000+ to bring it home.

Also, there is a 1909 VDB in PCGS PR64BN in the same auction. The PCGS price guide for this coin is currently at $8,500. The last one to trade on Heritage was an NGC PF64BN in June 2006 that sold for $8,050. Look like this slot in the price guide will soon make a big move also.

Brian, I think if those 16's are solid, I think it would take at least $15k to bring one home, and might even take $20k.

  • Please explain for us that don't know. Just what is a Matte Proof Lincoln?
My project: Complete proof Lincoln Memorial set. To accomplish this task I am sending in complete proof sets for grading.

Brother, when Lincolns were first minted in 1909, the proofs were produced by using sandblasted dies. The coin looked too much like the production pieces and fell out of favor with the public rather quickly. The mint wasn't selling any and so production stopped in 1916. The mintages were miniscule and today thase little beauties are treasured by collectors. They are hard to distinguish from the regular production pieces.

Go to the registry page and you'll see some dandies.

Lincoln Proofs were initially produced from 1909 to 1916 with a matte finish. Collectors of the day prefered the mirror like finish, many of these early proofs were spent into circulation making them quite rare. The Matte Proof cents have low mintages but their survival rate was much lower. Many became damaged, spotty and unattractive. The Mint packaged Matte Proofs in thin tissue paper, which soon toned the coins to a variety of different colors, sometimes amazing colors. A Matte Proof cent with all of its original mint red is rarely encountered.

As curly said, these little beauties are treasured by collectors today for their beauty and fine detail of President Lincoln. One could say Lincoln is displayed "at his best" by these rare small cents. Here are two images of the most detailed date of the Matte Proof series which is the 1916. In this year the new obverse master hub was introduced to greatly enhance the detail of Lincoln's hair and beard.

PCGS PR66BN: Both specimens of the population of 2/0 are displayed below:

  • Hey just set up the registry set of matte proof lincolns. 2 down 7 to go... I am going for toned pr 63-64s, that are choice p.q. for the grade. I have seen some of the sets on the registry site, and they are all amazing. This seems to be a very indepth/hush hush type series. Most dealers here in the local area look at me funny when I come in asking for matte proofs. Mr.Wagner is always ready to talk coins though. With collectors and dealers like this, the hobby will continue for the next generation with out a problem. Thanks for all the help in figuring out how to start a killer set.

    ahooka454,

Congrats on your new set! you are off to a good start.

I think the reason dealers in your area look at you funny when you ask for Matte Proofs is because they rarely run across them. The only way to aquire them IMO is to find them in some of the major auctions or attend a major coin show where a few dealers might have an example. Also, some of the players on this board might have an example for you once in awhile so keep on checking back and let us know how the "hunt" is going . Good to hear from you and welcome.

  • Thanks for all the words of wisdom from you Mr.Wagner... I think your right about the dealers here not running across them. I must say the 2 mpl's I have came from purchases off the internet, and am completely happy with them. I was at the Baltimore show this November, and was acctually alittle disappointed by the lack of mpl's. I found several nice ones but they were way to pricey for me. The ones in the condition I was searching for were, I hate saying this, but problem coins. Spots and scrapes trying to be passed of as insignificant to the coin. I may be a Young Numismatist, but that dosnt mean I am a dumb Numismatist... I heard alot of "minor spotting or minor scratches means you save money", If they were not a problem, why are you going to sell for a substantial loss to yourself? The coins on your site Mr.Wagner and all of the players here with registry sets, The coins I have seen presented by you are beautiful and deserving for theyre respected grades. Truley wonderful to see so much passion for 9 lil coins!!!
  • Quick question for anyone outthere, What is the common condition of the 1914 proof cent? I know it had a mintage of 1300 and change, but what kind of pieces are usually encountered? Any help is like always much appreciated.... Thanks all

  • Hey Dave,
Thanks for the welcome. I have a general question for anyone, How are the Pr66 Brown 1914mpl's? I came across one really nice 14 and I want to know if the price is too high. I am looking for lwer grade coins usually but its a real pretty coin. Any help would be great.... Thanks all.

Hey Adam and Welcome. To answer your question about what is the common grade on the 1914 MPL. I think a visit to the PCGS Population Report will answer your question. If you do not have access, the answer is R&B for for not only the 1914, But all of the MPL years. For 1914 the highest number graded by PCGS is 68 in Proof 64 R&B.

There are a bunch of ways to post a pic. Best to do a search for posting a pic on the general forum and pick the one that will work for you.

  • Its nice. Do you know if i can put it on the pcgs regisrty?
Iam not sure of this. If not oh well still a nice coin.
  • Hey all I just saw in the upcoming FUN sale, there is not 1 1914 prf up for grabs? The 09vdb is nice but some minor spots on it are not very bad, but id settle for an all br with no spots. But I will probably bid so who cares, lol. Any way Id like to here some comments on the 14. How often have you guys been encountering them? Thanks for all the help as always....
  • Hey all,
WS, i saw the list of current available coins you posted, the pr 1914 at fun is no longer there. As of 10minutes ago they have none listed and consignment is over. I am not sure if one is gonna be, but if not, I wonder why. They have everyother one in one place. I just figured with as big as fun always is, youd see multiples of it...

To everyone, Thanks alot for all the advice and help. It really has made collecting more fun. Since my injury a few yrs ago, I hang out at home and search through coins. Now I can chat with all of you and gain knowledge from, well the market leaders in this field. I just wanted to say thanks....

If it was a consignment, the owner may have changed his mind and pulled it, or sold it! Anyway, we still have a few weeks to go and while I am not sure of the cut off date, the addition of new MPL's is always possible.

  • hey ws,
you know i was searching through the lots and realized it was a 2 parter. the really choice coins seem to be up for session 1. which includes the rare 09vdb. there are no 1912s-194s. but in session 2 there is a nice 1914. See the things i learn from here and others is invaluable. Thanks to all.
