19th Century Japanese Issues

I'm interested in the rectangular silver and gold 'Samurai' coins I've been seeing on eBay. I'd like to learn something about them, but haven't had any luck finding any info. Know any books or web sites?

  • Click here, then scroll down to the "shu" and "bu" picture links. The first 1 shu listing is next to the 1829-37 listing.

In several years of web surfing, I've never found a better or more comprehensive site regarding Japanese coins - it's even better and more complete than the Japan Mint's own site. image

Edited to add: BTW the "Samurai" designation is an EBay hype invention and not a common term used by genuine Japanese coinage collectors in describing these coins.

  • Thanks! That's terrific. I guess 'Br' is brass (it's certainly not bromine), and obviously 'Ar' is meant to be silver, not argon. But great pictures and information. Thanks again.
