Is this some worthless 1933 Guine coin? Nice color though!

Picked it up at a local dealer's shop. I wanted it for the color on the Obv. Very shimmery Rose, Green, Violet colors not represented well in the photos.

It's a KM-3. The book value says it's somewhere in the neighborhood of $65. I'm hardpressed to believe that's even remotely close to being correct.

Thoughts?

  • Those are very popular and usually go for over catalog value on Ebay.

If anything, that might be too low. I'd buy all I can find in red Unc. for $65.

  • A more scarce coin (below) but much lower grade that went for about catalog value. A high grade example like yours would command a premium.

    I bought a 10 & 20 C. pair at the 2007 CICF for about $150. Both are 64RB, maybe better.

Krause is way off on these.

That said, you can still get lucky sometimes. The 1930 coppers from Cabo Verde are similarly popular for type collectors. I got a pair of 20c from there a few years ago... for $5, shipping included! (Dimitri has one of them image )

The Portuguese numismatic market [in Portugal; the U.S. market's "mileage may vary"] has experienced a downturn in the past 12 months. But quality coins will always carry a premium.

Eric, I finally decided to submit it, just out of curiosity, but it was a bad day at NGC and the coin graded 63RB. image Regardless, it's still in my box of favourites and no grade will ever change that. image

PS: For newer members, I was the lucky winner of an earlier spoon giveaway, where the prize was this beautiful 1930 Cabo Verde 20 centavos.

PS2: After 3 years of procrastination, I'm almost ready to liberate Phil's webspace.... imageimage
