I have no focus and am working on a bajillion sets at one time....ONE SET COMPLETED, HA!

Over the weekend I calculated the # of sets I'm working on and where I am at with each. Can't believe how out of focus I am. Here's the list: (all baseball unless noted)

1977 Topps: Complete, need to replace 3 cards. So I'm at 99.5%.

1976 Topps Football: 99.8% complete. (527/528, need Randy White RC). EDITED TO ADD: Purchased a White RC off Ebay today. Done!

1976 Topps: Complete, need to replace 200 cards. 69.6% complete.

1975 Topps: 94.2% complete (622/660).

1973 Topps: Complete, need to replace 157 cards. 76.2% complete.

1972 Topps: 40.4% complete (318/787).

1971 Topps: 14.3 % complete (108/752).

1969 Topps: 25.7% complete (171/664).

1968 Topps: 78.7% complete (471/598).

1967 Topps: 33.6% complete (205/609).

1963 Topps: 23.6% complete (136/576).

1961 Topps: 36.2% complete (213/587).

1958 Topps: 36.4% complete (180/494).

1956 Topps: 33.3% complete (114/342).

In addition to that mess, I have "starter sets" of less than 100 cards in 1954 Topps, 1959, 1960, 1962, and 1970, as well as 1952 Bowman Football.

Am I an unfocused fool or a crazy genius? Wait a minute, don't answer that!

Stay classy,

one thing is for sure, you can never say there is nothing out there you need!!
i feel this may be a good long term strategy on set building,as long as you are looking for bargains on the sets you need many cards on, probably willing to pay more for a set you only need a few cards to complete or upgrade

good luck and keep plugging along

  • Ron...I would say it depends on your time frame, budget and whether you have a realistic "GPA" goal relative to your budget (unless you're buying raw cards). I think your list is doable depending on the answers.

  • money is always the limiting variable when you enter this hobby. If you have the money to collect a lot, good for you. If not, then you'll need to scale down. I had to make a tough decision recently to drop a few sets....had to because i needed the money.

These sets are primarily raw, and my intention is not to do completely graded sets. I might do that with the '56 set, but the rest will remain mostly raw except for some stars and any common that looks 9ish (or 10ish in the case of a 70's set).

My ultimate goal is a complete Topps run from 1951-80, but I doubt I will ever have the dough to put together a nice '52 and '53 set. I think eventually (10 years or so) I can do the rest, but I intended to do these one at a time and now it's ballooned out of control.

At least I'm now laser focused on completing the '68, '73, '75, and '77 sets.

In the early 90's, I started building high grade raw Topps baseball sets from 1959-1980. Around 1998, I only completed three raw sets: the 1970, 1972 and 1975 Topps, and was over 90% on 1967, 1968 and 1969 and about 70% on the 1971 and 1973 sets and the rest varied from 25% to 50%.

Then when grading and eBay came on strong in 1999 I decide to only work on graded sets from '64-'75 and sold off the other years. To make a long story short, I'm now at '67 -'72.

The bottom line is that it's a very time consuming and very costly project to complete one high-end graded set let alone multiple sets. Good luck!

that why im only doing same one for next 10 years-and possibly 55aa fb because they are beautiful too and only 100 cards cards in it
  • For now, I'm hanging on to only 2 'series' of sets, Topps baseball and Topps Heritage. I'm slowly picking up sets to do a 1980-current run of the regular baseball sets,. Once I've finished the run from 1980-2007, I may start going back through the 1970s sets.

As for my Heritage collection, I'm 15 cards away from finishing 2004, and I've got a 2005 base for which I just need to find the SPs and variations. That leaves me finishing the red/black back variations in my 2001 set and the entire 2003 set, and I may wait until after the 2008 set is released to start on the 2003 set, or just buy it complete from eBay.

So, no, having a few projects at one time isn't crazy. image

The solution is quite simple, just do what I did: I was working on 10 different Topps sets from the 1950's (1951 Red Backs - 1959), now I'm just working on one (the 1950's Topps Mega Set) image.

I'm working on 10 sets right now (well, taking a winter break, but you know what I mean):

    57,61,62,64,65,66,67,68,71,72

The last three should be done when I start back up in the spring. Hopefully I can get the 57 done by summer and then finish the 67. The rest will come in time, as well as the ones I haven't started.

  • I too am guilty of this. Currently I am working on 8 sets as well as my Pittsburgh Pirates and Postwar Hall of Famer projects which will probably both be ongoing for years and years. As for the 8 sets here's where I am at :

These are all Topps Baseball by the way

    1965 - 35%
    1968 - 50%
    1969 - 83%
    1970 - 88%
    1971 - 87%
    1972 - 80%
    1973 - 97%
    1974 - 99%

For the 1970-73 sets I need mostly high numbers. as for the 74 I need 8 cards which I just haven't gotten around to.

After these are done I'll be moving onto the 66 and 67 sets.

    Hi everyone,

    I am working on the following sets in PSA 7/8 baseball...1960, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967.

I need to narrow my focus to be able to finish some of these. I have 100 card starter sets from 1964 and 1966 that include low pops, stars etc. Most are PSA 7 with some 8s mixed in. Would like to trade or sell these if someone has an interest.

Also have about 300 different raw 1967 baseball...mostly commons that range from NM to EX...average condition probably EX/MT available.

Shoot me a PM or email at jeff58@sbcglobal.net

I would like to thank the others that are in this club with me. At least I know I am not alone.

I fully blame ADD for this. The silver lining is that when I get close to completing a set, my ADD hyperfocus kicks in and all I think about is getting the set done. When I get real close, I stop eating for several days because all I do is sit in front of the computer waiting for the next round of Ebay listings.
