ANA Centennial special hardcover edition of the Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins

I just bought one of these 2 volume sets at a Half Price Books near my house for $19.99 - I am stoked. All I had for world coin reference was "Collecting World Coins" which is much less comprehenssive.

I see that I couldn't buy the same set for less than $70, which is awesome. However, does anyone know how many were printed?

I am excited. Now I wish I had a dealer nearby with a good world coin "junk box". If nothing else, the books look real nice on my shelf.

I used those for a decade. If you bought a set for 20 bucks, you should be stoked. I paid $120 for mine when they first came out! And even now, 15 years later, they're bound to be worth far more than $20 to a book collector.

I really wish Krause would do a hardcover special edition again.

Congratulations. I don't know how many were printed, but the books you just bought are collectors' items in their own right.

  • I figured as much. I very rarely find good books at Half Price - it's usually just a bunch of 4 year old Red Books and one or two general coin books. I have bought several older Ancient coin books there as well, but those are getting to be fewer and father between.

I knew that a regular used Krause could be rounded up for around 15, so this hardcover set seemed like a steal, regardless.

Is there a group of numismatic book collectors around that would have a listing of the value of books? I'd be interested to know if I have any other treasures.

Thanks for letting me know the issue price, at least. I would assume that even if publication was not limited, at that price it would limit itself.

There are only two that I can find listed at Abebooks, both well above your price. Abe can be decent for getting an idea of pricing, but sometimes the dealers can be optimistic. I can't really comment on this one though. But in general I've found that you'd be lucky to get a third to two-thirds of what prices trend at on Abe by selling on ebay.

I have generally found coin books rather cheaply on ABE. I think coin dealers charge more than general book dealers.
